Sorry but - I wasn't born yesterday!!!

I don't believe that ANYBODY alive or dead could have a repertoire that big (unless they are 500 years old) and I suggest anyone who reads this list to be more than skeptical of it all

You know, anybody here could make a list of every piano piece ever written and claim it to be their rep list, but that doesn't make it true, does it?

Lol way to drag up a way old thread. Basically if you are a virtuoso who can play Gaspard+Hammerklavier+Rach 3+Transcendental Etudes+OC you can just claim everything to be in your repertoire.

I've seen a few videos of Pace, in addition to many of his recordings (many with other comparisons), and he truly does have great playing to back up a long list such as that. He's  a great ambassador for modern music.

no mendelssohn?? :o

Playing Mendelssohn isn't as important as bringing to light many of the modern composers that don't get the recognition they deserve, which is what Ian Pace does. Composers such as Mendelssohn (who get the recognition they deserve [plus more]) would only waste his time.

It certainly makes one wonder what "repertoire" means.  Isn't there another fellow on the internet, who uploads pdf scores to his website, and claims to have a repertoire of basically the entire piano repertory?

Fabio Bidini, who has over 80 concertos in his repertoire, lists them by preparation time; if I remember correctly, most are available on 1 day's notice.  I am curious what this pianist means by "repertoire:" when can he play these pieces?  What makes them part of his repertoire -  has he alreayd performed all of them, is he ready to perform any of them?  What exactly does he mean by this list?

I've never heard the pianist play, but my suspicion is that he may make his list on the basis of what he believes he is capable.  For instance, he has sight read pieces of Thomas Ades or Percy Grainger, gone through all the Beethoven sonatas, the complete works of Brahms, etc, and found himself capable of playing those pieces, thus including them in his repertoire list.  If we all did that, we would all have enormous repertoire lists - granted, excluding many pieces listed here.

But it makes one wonder what is the point of this list?  Are these all memorized pieces?  Are these his real repertoire, the pieces he performs season in and season out?  Are these pieces he has sufficiently studied to record, to perform, to play for the living composers, etc?  We just don't know.  It would take someone studying his concert programs to know whether these pieces are actually in his repertoire.  Perhaps someone here can tell us.  I am thinking ahinton.

I think he is capable of playing and memorizing large amounts of repertoire at a time. He has performed many long and complex works by memory in recital, such as Finnissy's History of Photography in Sound, which is about 4-5 hours long if I recall correctly. It is considered an extremely difficult work of immense complexity, hence Finnissy's "New Complexity". I also know that he is capable of learning large sums of repertoire quickly and efficiently, yet completely. I think he is capable of learning all the aforementioned pieces. And remember, once someone learns a piece, it enters their repertoire. Thats just my take on the situation. If he is capable of playing and memorizing pieces such as the Finnissy, he is certainly capable of playing all those pieces and including them in his repertoire.

The question is: At what tempo can he play all these works and how many wrong  or skipped notes occur?

Many people can play all these works if they play them really slowly and have the help of a pageturner.

I certainly don't doubt his capability.  But I still wonder about the definition here of "repertoire."

For instance, many years ago I learned the Beethoven 1st concerto.  I didn't do much with it, played it maybe twice, and now, can still remember long stretches, but not the whole piece.  And, many aspects of technique I would have to revise.  Can I count this in my repertoire?  I learnt it; I know I can play it; I just don't play it.

Or, let's say I sight-read Chopin op.25 no.1; it looks easy enough, and I can sight-read at tempo without any note mistakes.  Is this piece now in my repertoire?

Think of a repertory theatre.  They don't have a play read-through, decide that play would be good for their repertory, and then say it is there.  It has to be performed, and it has to be performed enough times to be considered not just a fluke, but something they do.

my take on it is that performance is essential to repertoire.  I can't believe that all these works are in this pianists repertoire, simply because I cannot believe he performed them all.  Yet I am sure he is capable of playing every one of them.  I don't know what he has or has not performed, but would like to know.

I have heard Ian Pace perform non-new complexity works with the score in front of me, such as the Dusapin etudes, and he definitely shows his proficiency there. Those pieces definitely require a sensitive touch and it will be noticed if a note is missed here and there. And I don't think these can be read through that easily (I have tried [and failed]).

Can anyone please upload or link a video of Pace playing these monsterpieces so we can see how good he is.

I've thought about posting that, but the video is quite large and would require some doctoring. Maybe I'll upload one or two examples to YouTube so this can be put to rest. Dusapin, for those who aren't familiar with him, is perhaps the most "normal" thing that Pace has recorded.

God give it a rest. Who cares if he can play his listed rep well or not. What fulfillment do you get out of it? It's this skepticism that pissed off people like virtuoso1.

Here are two performances from the DVD that he put out along with the Dusapin etudes and concerto. Great videos and great compositions, imo.

Very interesting to finally hear Pace perform live. The last clip showed some impressive hand independance I guess but I expected more technical playing. His playing worked fine here but I wonder if he can play Sorabji´s hardest works uptempo and accurate

I might upload a few more segments from that Dusapin DVD. Some of the other parts really show off his technique.

I haven't heard of Dusapin before, but given that, I thought Ian played well.  Nice touch with the drawings...

Whether or not he can is an issue which those who wish to do so may debate; what I can assure those who do, those who don't and everyone else is that it's an odds-on certainty that he won't...

I won't upload everything that I have. Maybe just another segment from the etudes and maybe one from the rehearsal session of Dusapin's piano concerto. If I upload everything off the DVD, that wouldn't give anyone any incentive to buy the DVD! God knows he and Dusapin need the money.

Then I can only assume that Mr Pace (who I've heard live, once, but never met face-to-face) is a savant - i.e. someone with a freak ability. Interesting but no lesson there for the rest of us. John Ogdon was one too, I'm pretty sure. Ordinary folk just have to sit there and practise!

That's putting it very mildly (or very discreetly, or both) - indeed, a whole lot more mildly than he would put it himself!...
