practise noise
on: August 20, 2003, 12:53:08 AM
If you are living with family or people beside and behind-yes everywhere like neighbours-do you feel disturbed when you are practising all day long?
Like your mom is coocking in the kitchen and make big noises-then your practise will be disturbed and you can not concentrate? Or you don't care about it? How will you solve this?

I can't practice for long periods of time with noise and people around...  Way too many distractions...  People yelling...  My family's loud...  I still go 6-8 hours a day though.  So how do I do it?!  I don't practice at home hehe...  I go to church which has a nice Knabe 7 foot grand and theres an organ there too I can play around with.  No one is ever there so it's completely quiet and theres no distractions such as tv and computer to tempt me!  And it's like a 20 minute drive there so I really don't want to go home till im SURE I'm done ^_^

I keep the piano in my bedroom, and I really think I disturb everybody more than they ever could disturb me, actually...

ya I annoy my family more than they annoy me.  They often complain about all my banging on the keyboard when I mess up (that was a long time ago)  ;D

I really don't have that problem. I just drown everybody out of my head. In fact, my teacher would say that you are a lucky person. If you learn to practice with all the noise when it comes to performance you will have that much better nerves. Noise happens when you perform, get used to it.

We have these practice rooms at our school, and walls arent soundproof, so you hear other people practicing, singing, violins going, slamming doors, it makes me angry but im learning to get used to it.

I used to practice with lots of people around.  I never really thought about it.  I was just used to having people around while I practiced.  The only annoying things were when a door slammed and I was startled or if somebody kept coming up asking questions.

how can you practice at home? i couldn't, and not because of the noise. where i'm practicing, i have "practice neighbors" who play brass, and i got used to it - now i don't even hear them while i'm playing.

Yes, this is similar to how it was when I was in school.  I feel that there were pros and cons.

Pros:  I liked the fact that there was activity outside my little room so I didn't get too lonely, and sometimes it was fun to "spy" on my neighbors (could be inspiring too).  Sometimes when I would get frustrated with something, I would seek out one of my best friends to play for him or him for me (and sometimes just to cry a little).  It was great!

Cons:  I found that I was more worried about what people would be hearing coming from my room, so I sometimes didn't take the steps necessary to thoroughly learn what I would have in other circumstances.  Also, I was too shy to figure out my true body language because anybody could be peaking in the narrow little window and 'I might look stupid' (which seemed to happen somewhat often- (both  :))).

Anyhow, going from there to practicing completely alone was really scary to me.  I had never done this before.  Suddenly it was just me and the piano with nobody to notice. But, I will say that I do enjoy it now.

I think that it is most important to be able to practice correctly no matter where you are, whose around, or whats going on around you (its good practice too  ;)- for performing).

i totally agree with you that it's most important to practice correctly no matter where or what, but this can be achieved only by becoming totally deaf and blind about anything except what you're doing - and that doesn't help me in preparing for stage. on stage, i am always conscious not of what is happening but of the people listening - i can't hear them if they're talking but i can feel if they're enjoying or not.

what i'm trying to say (sorry for my confuse expressions - late hour :) ) is that this way of practicing in a public place, with others, is as bad as possible (besides all your cons - and you are right - it also does not prepare you for playing on stage, at least not correctly) - but it's the best i could come up with... (and, surprisingly enough, it works for me)

it's generally ok at home, provided my parents aren't having a nice lengthy conversation cos i can hear it and it drives me nuts. or if my dad starts vacuming whilst i'm playing and then i'm just competing to drown the noise out, and that's freakin annoying. but other than that it's ok. my neighbours are good, i probably annoy them play starting my practice at 8.30am on a sunday morning! oh well hehe
