Staying away from the piano, Can it do any good??
on: October 16, 2005, 11:20:09 PM
I have been practicing everyday for like about 3 months. I have spent 2 days recently without touching the piano and then went directly to the lesson. I expected to play badly but to my surpise my teacher was pleased with my playing (this is a rare event BTW).
I think this short break allows you to interpret the music in a different way. Playing the same stuff everyday makes you playing like a machine, without thinking and concentration in the music.

for me it depends on the state of my pieces. for example i just did an exam so my pieces were supposedly at their peak of goodness, and then i didn't play at all for a week and at my next lesson they sucked quite badly. however i have had the experience where i might get really frustrated with a piece because it's not working and i just feel like i need a break from it, and so won't play it for a week and then all of a sudden it's gone up to an entirely new level! so i think you have to do it wisely, in terms of breaking for a week, a couple of days is a bit different, i do that all the time thanks to uni and i don't particularly like that on a regular basis, that might be my main problem at the moment, irregular practice...
but yeah overall if you need time to think then it's good to take a break

It's always a good idea to take a breather. I find it refreshing to stay away from piano for awhile. Perhaps, find a different hobby or activities.

Well, for me it all depends on the piece. If you have been practising the same few pecies day after day, taking a break from the piano would be a good idea. You will come back as a fresher person, your fingers will be 'revived', and you'll have different views on how to play the piece.

Yes, taking a day or from the piano actually really helps me alot. I think itss because it clears out your mind.
