I think your teacher is probably right...learn your pieces carefully, in sections. Make sure, if you divide it into sections, that you practise from before the beginning to after the end of each section (so that the sections overlap). For example, if the piece were in four sections (bars 1-8, 9-16, 17-24, and 25-32), you could practise bars 1-9, 8-17, 15-25, and 24-32. Any part that is hard for you, you should spend more effort on. Don't just play from the beginning to the end every time. Try to figure out what makes it difficult; your teacher should be able to help you find ways to solve your problems. Could you tell us how long you have been playing piano, and what pieces you are working on? Also, is there anything in particular you are having trouble with?
