These things are easier when the People's Republic of China is bankrolling your career. Many artists could acheive what Lang does if they never had to worry about life away from the keyboard. I'm not trying to diminish or negate his gifts, which are clearly extraordinary. But he is one lucky dog...born in the right place at the right time....

We will see, the same has been said  of other young pianists who become superstars overnight; some prevail, most wash up on shore....but I believe this one will prevail...

THat picture is reeeeeeally pissing me off.

I WILL NEVER BOW DOWN TO HIM!!! Until he starts taking Piano Performance seriously, I can't accept him as a proper Pianist.

I heard his Mendelssohn Piano Concerto Performance and he played it really maturely there. I was quite pleased. If (and i do mean IF) he starts performing seriously like he did the Mendelssohn.... He might become a good pianist.

having said that... He is NOT underrated... He is overrated... and when he matures and becomes more responsible in his playing, then he won't be either under or over rated.

Tremendous respect for his playing and technique. Now only if he would stop those friggin facial expressions.

I can't watch him. He looks like he's reaching orgasm every 30 seconds. Maybe he's getting down with the piano?  ;D

Why do people think that they have to take the piano so seriously ALL the time.  There's nothing wrong with joking around every once in a while.

Just because were serious musicians and music fans doesn't mean we have to be so serious all the time.

When he matures as a pianist and takes his piano performances seriously... I WILL take these words back. Having said that, I'll probably die of old age before he does... but we'll see.

At least I don't have to worry about Lang Lang killing me seeing that no major pianists ever seem to visit Western Australia. Lucky me.    ;D

And I would like to thank Cherub Rocker for posting that video of Lang lang. Thanks to you I now OFFICIALLY hate LANG LANG!!!! You have made me a happy man. I though that he could play serious after listening to his Mendlessohn and you have now wrecked any good thoughts I have about him.

While i will say that he is technically very skilled and seems to have the flexibility of Cziffra for the Vamping chords, his performance stinks. OK... Maybe that was harsh, but his Liszt HR 2 video performance STINKS!!!!

HE butchered that piece 5 ways to hell, and I will never forgive him. And the only reason most people like him, is because most people don't know anything about music or play a musical instrument. It's going to take me a long time to get over that video.

Lang Lang is super-talented, and should be especially respected by his pianist-collegues, not just the general concert-goer.

NO NO NO, My point is he completely slaughtered the musicality of the piece. He didn't perform Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, he performed something that had about 3 chord similar with Hungarian Rhapsody.

Just imagine Stevie if you created a Musical masterpiece... and I completely change all the chords, and swap parts over and do things like that. You wouldn't be too happy.

I don't take any offence to what you said stevie, because I wasn't talking about the fact that he made 2 or 3 wrong notes or played the ending too slowly. I didn't say anything about that. I'm trying to get my point across that he didn't play HR 2....

He played a butchered mess of something resembling HR 2.

I couldn't care less if he played something too slowly, or played a couple of wrong notes... Everyone does that...    :-\

And you think the audience on the Jay Leno show cares about purity?  Do you think they can sit through a 10 minute piece?  Good pianists have to know what kind of an audience they're dealing with and adapt to that audience.  Sometimes Liszt improvised when he played other people's music and didn't play them exactly as written.

We as pianists have to realize that not everyone appreciates Classical music as much as we do.

If a pianist is going to perform on the Letterman show he's not going to play Sorabji's Opus Clavicembalisticum.

I will bow to no man but god. Lang Lang is not god ,if you bow to him it is a sham, he is a great pianist but i thought long and hard about what it is that can make him different than the rest of the geart pianist, i found nothing, so i gess he lacks originality, another trained monkey. He has Horowitzs fast finger work and
Glen Goulds strange mannerisms. Another China men who amazes us then blends into the rest of the other china men. He reminds me of Bruse Lee, but Bruse lee was totally original a truly great man.

I guarantee that if anyone is harbouring IRRATIONAL prejudices against Lang Lang's performances, they should watch this video, and their prejudices will give way to an evidence-based assessment of what the guy’s capable of (at least sometimes): a stomach-churningly tawdry butchery of music and vainglorious pandering to the basest urges of an audience. Next time he should go the whole way and play some really showy-offy left-hand-only piece while swilling a glass of vodka. This might at least justify the facial expressions (or, more to the point, hide them from the camera).
Apart from these minor quibbles, I think he’s a good piano player.

I do have to agree that he is underrated.  There are some people out that who take music so seriously, that they never actually expererience enjoying it.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

OMG!!  Lang Lang is so amazing!!

Yes he is... i will criticize first, a lot of this was innacurate and not focused, but what was good was great! At last someone is around who is enthusiastic, and can communincate this love of the music and the piano to the audience, even an audience of dumb TV mofos on Leno. See this guy's streetwise, he knows that what is important IN THIS SITUATION is to wow the audience with animal energy, and wow it he did. It was not the best piano playing I've ever seen or heard but it WAS the best for most of the  people who watch this show. And now maybe they will go out and hear more, some will for sure. And for that Lang earns a lot of good Karma.... 8) Yeah, his faces bother me too; mercifully these pro cameramen (unlike the PBS idiots) stay focused on his hands. Anyway, you heard the scream at the end; and this is a bunch of American tourists who were probably disapointed that they were seeing the Leno with the boring classical guy, not something "good" like Coldplay. He won them over; sure  he's not the most erudite and sophisticated pianist but we have plenty of those; what we've needed is a new front man, and here he is.

And so like Daniel, Lang Lang ventured into the lion's den filled with dumb vapid overfed Americans; and he made them listen, and some of them now care; it's good Karma for him.

Wonder what his Goldberg Variations will sound like.... ???

are you aware that he is actually playing the horowitz arrangement?

he had to edit it a little bt to fit it in the time slot he had

and he was playing for dozens of millions of people, very nervous, so you cant expect the best performance ever.

so moments of this performance are poor, but certain others are extremely thrilling, overall i enjoyed it alot!

and thats what its all about, langlang makes me smile, and i love him for it. :)

Actually you really can't call this the Horowitz arrangement, he uses certain things like the Hollywood Jazz chords and the final octaves, and there's a chromatic octave run that does not exist in Horowitz, and I think I missed the three part fugue thing that was the crowning glory of the Horowitz. No matter, it was great. More later, have to teach...

Well, at least they liked it! People don't clap like that at jazz concerts unless they like the solo, so they liked him, cool. We will"educate" them later, I don't think classical piano as a live art form is in any shape right now to be dismissive of ANY applause.

BTW I just came from the barbershop, and my barber (incidentally a very good mariachi and rock/blues guitarist) asked me " do you know who this Asian kid playing the hell out of the piano is?" So I made the faces and he said "Yeah that's him! He is amazing, usually those classical guys just sit there, this guy is so into it! Sure they play well but this guy just loves it! I never heard anyone play classical like that! Loved it!" He had seen Leno and more recently the Chopin E minor Concerto...

This and some similar posts have convinced me that I was a bit harsh on Lang Lang yesterday. If his performance meant that they end up listening to and enjoying good (classical) (piano) music, then Lang L. deserves massive compliments. I probably sounded like one of those sexually frustrated don't-play-anything-unless-it's-Vienese-Classicism-from-the-Urtext-edition dudes.
I guess half my problem was that, apart from not liking the playing, I was cringing with embarassment for him and the music he is an ambassador for. Rather than picking up the vibe that he was enjoying it, I picked up that the guy looked like he was so up himself that he was back down, and that the audience must have thought he's a total toss merchant. Maybe growing up in Australia gave me an inbuilt horror of showing off that is stronger than in other cultures, and if some of you felt that he looked like he was enjoying the music rather than saying 'look at my stupendous talent', then maybe his performance will do some good, at any rate a lot more good than if they'd brought in some reincarnation of Schnabel playing the Diabelli variations...

He is not a legend... Horowitz and Cziffra are legends. IF.... he smartens up a bit and matures his playing, he could (possibly) be a legend.

And he wasn't playing the Horowitz Arrangement, Horowitz's arrangement stays closer to the original than Lang Langs did.
