sostenuto pedal
on: August 28, 2003, 04:46:14 PM
Iīm thinking about buying an old Bosendorfer (170), but it doesnīt have sostenuto pedal. Does anyone heard or know if it is possible to change parts of the mechanism and the pedal to get one middle pedal? thanks.

This must be a very old piano, because i believe Steinway started putting sostenutos on their pianos by 1874.  I really dont know how good of an engineer you are, but this probably would be tough to do without messing up your strings or other parts of the frame.  Why dont you just go with a different piano?
A modern house without a flush toilet... uncanny.

Probably possible, probably expensive

https://www.rennerusa.com/Renner_Action/Action_Parts/Underlever/underlever.html

That shows the mechanism you want to have fitted.

Then you need a middle pedal, carpentry to the lyre to cut out room for it, rods, trapwork etc.

And a few more etc.'s I can't think of right now

thanks. What I donīt know if it has space inside for the sostenuto rail. the technician told me that this would mass up the piano. I was thinking just about buying a new lyre and pedals, that would not be so expensive. i have another technician, but hes traveling right now, so itīs hard to decide what to do. thanks a lot, really.

Hey Mr. Brian Lawson, RPT,
could you tell me wich parts would I need, and really important where to buy them in internet? because the technician here where i live seems not even to try and I would like at least to know what should be done, how much it cost. By the way, am I right, would I need also a sostenuto rail? How much work would be involved?
Thanks for your answer, waiting your help,
Marco
