college time!
on: November 07, 2005, 04:29:27 AM
Hi, first of all, I'd like to thank all of you for reading this, as I am aware that such "audition repertoire" threads are quite common around here. However, I do like to get some opinions on my auditioning choices.
I'm not planning to apply for Juilliard. What I have in mind is more of a standard four year college music program, and most of them are quite universal about their auditioning requirements: three works from three different periods. So, my teacher and I have chosen a Bach-Baroque, a Beethoven Sonata-late classical/early romantic, and a Albeniz-modern. Here's the list:
Bach: WTC No.6 Dm (bookII)
Beethoven: Sonata No.17, Op.31, No.2 ("Tempest")
Albeniz: Leyenda
I still have a little over half a year until the audition time, so I'm planning to do one or two more pieces for alternatives. So, please, feel free to give me suggestions on the repertoire as it is now, and also new alternative pieces that I can readily replace with any of the above for the better.
Thank you.

You can probably get a true Romantic piece in there. I personally think Chopin is overdone. On top of that, most faculty that you're going to be auditioning for might have etched in their mind exactly what type of interpretation these Chopin pieces should have.
Perhaps pick one of Robert Schumann's character pieces. I've been performing some of his pieces from his Novelletten, Op. 21. They aren't played that often, so it might sound fresh to an audition jury.
Same thing goes with a 20th century piece. Maybe pick something that's a little more "out there" but that can show off your abilities. I previously had success with a piece called "Ba Ban" by the Chinese composer, Chen Xi. Check that out and see if it's to your liking.

What about a Scriabin piece? The etudes are awesome, but his prelude are fantastic as well. Also his 'Vers la Flamme' is a REALLY cool, but difficult piece that might be a really cool post-Romantic option.

I like the Gershwin preludes, but I don't think they are a good choice for auditions. not very showy.
