Mozart concerto K.415
on: November 07, 2005, 03:20:29 PM
I grew up with this concerto because my sister had it in her repertoire when I was about 5. I have a pretty skewed impression that it is one of the most popular Mozart concertos, even though Music Minus One does not have it in its line up.
Am I totally off, or is this one as well known as, say 9, 12, 17, 23, 20, 21 or 24? (415 = 13).
Cheers,
H

Hi, iumonito,
This is a lovely work, but not especially a popular one as far as being played in concert. It's interesting, as it has a larger orchestration than the previous ones, with tympani, and a "martial" sort of air about it.
I would say it's less well-known than the concerti you listed. It is fairly easy technically and is a good "student" piece.
I like the third movement, which has a pretty 6/8 rondo with episodes of "tragic" sounding adagio interspersed. It is unlike most of the concerti in that it flutters to a soft ending rather than loud or bravado.
Play it! It needs some TLC.
