Most underrated composer
on: November 09, 2005, 09:30:39 AM
Who would you say is the most underrated?

I would say Buxtehude.

J.S. Bach got many of his best ideas from him and still Bach is the only one we praise today.

Another one os Jan Schweelink. His fantasia A4 was 150 years ahead of his and truly great piece.

For piano I would propably vote for Scriabin.

Liszt is also underrated. Liszt is 10 times as original as a composer then Paganini.

I would say Vivaldi... or Posibbly scarlatti, not as famous as the others.

Last one - Moszkowski, you hear almost nothing about his music.

György Ligeti: many assume that his music is avant-garde nonsense, but it's so much more than that.

In this recent thread https://www.pianostreet.com/smf/index.php/topic,13770.0.html we are discussing the music of Gabriel Fauré, a superb composer who really should be better recognized.

Thalberg: His transcriptions are AMAZING. Definetly doesn't get the respect he deserves.

Medtner

Couperin

Which are the must-have ones?

These are my personal faves:

Robert Le Diable (waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy better than the Liszt transcription)

Chuck Norris didn't lose his virginity- he systematically tracked it down and destroyed it.

Why would you say Vivaldi?  I mean, he's awesome, but he's routinely considered one of the major greats.

Telemann.

Franz Schmidt - the last Austrian Late-Romantic master. Very few piano works, unfortunately.

I thought Buxtehude mainly wrote organ music.

I might have nominated Edward MacDowell, but I now believe he has come back considerably in the last decade or so.  Most of his piano works are now in print, most from major publishers (e.g., Alfred).

Some composers suffered for reasons of inappropriate associations.  MacDowell was trained musically in Germany and retained a lot of links to that country.

With the onset of World War I, there was a negative reaction.  About the same reason that German Shepherd dogs were renamed "Alsacians."

Cesar Franck for me, no contest.

Alkan's up there.

For composers that are already popular, I think Mahler deserves more attention.
