Copyright situation too difficult to bother with
on: November 17, 2005, 11:37:22 PM
I thought members may be interested in my playing of various stride pieces in the Audition Room, and began by writing to Paul Posnak about his Waller transcriptions. He replied that he had no objections at all but that I should check with Hal Leonard as a formality. They, as it turns out, have considerable objection even though the copyrights are not actually owned by Hal Leonard but by a variety of other people, Chappell, Mills and so on, one assumes. Nobody could even tell me who these people are, and obviously Mr Posnak didn't know either, even though he did all the hard work of transcribing !

Quite frankly, I think this is too stupid for words. I cannot see my home-made idiosyncratic recordings setting the world on fire. Nonetheless, apparently that's the way the law stands and I cannot be bothered pursuing the matter any further. So you won't be hearing any of my Waller, Johnson, Roberts, French ..... on the audition room. I suppose somebody will be telling me next that I mustn't post recordings of my own stuff !

Ted,
As Piano Street have a license for providing recordings of copyright protected music you could freely upload your recordings to the Audition Room.
Just make sure to include details about composer and arranger(s) and the rest is automagically taken care of (including paying the royalties.)
Convenient and legal!  :)

Thank you for explicitly stating that, Nils. For some reason I had supposed the licence was more restricted than it actually is. I shall see what I can play well enough to post.

Given the royalty payments, I would have said choose something you've composed :)
