Video tape sabatoge (sp?)
on: November 18, 2005, 04:59:31 AM
Okay so I have what will probably be my biggest performance ever on Sunday night.  (Trust me, it's not that big, I'm very sheltered).  But I will be playing in a real concert setting, not just a "recital."  There is a whole bunch of us playing and singing, so I'm just part of the program.  All the registered teachers of our area are putting it on.  But here's my question.  Do I dare get my parents to video tape it?  I've never taped myself performing before, except in my living room when I was practicing.  I REALLY don't want to mess this up because even though it's small compared to alot of the things people on here have played at, it probably will be the biggest solo moment I'm going to get.  Which is also the reason I want to tape it.  I don't know.  I don't want to have added pressure, but I really want to remember this night.  What do I do?? :-\

I would say "YES, YES, YES" by all means, have it video taped.  Something that the school I attended did was video tape us at the end of every year.  So, I have on one video tape, four year's worth of work.  I can see the "progression" with each one.  Visual recording is helpful.

In your case, while it would be wonderful to remember the event in this way, and most likely it would only be your last if you decided it would be so, you will look back on it and be able to learn a great deal by watching it.

Also, I can't imagine you would be thinking about your home-made video tape being formed while you are up there on stage.  Nobody esle has to see it (except for us curious minds here at PS... he he), and your parents (the only other ones with access to the tape) will obviously be there anyway, so why not ?

Hmm.... You know what m1469?  I think I will.  If I blow it, I will try my best to recover gracefully so that I don't completely die laughing when I watch they tape.  Of course, laughing at blowing it will only come a few days LATER, hehe.  Thank you.

oooo, cool  :)  I am happy to hear it and happy I could help.  Well, you know, even if something like that did happen, you would have the opportunity to see just exactly how you deal with that kind of thing.  What is visible on your face and so on.  That can be really useful.  It's all a big learning experience (life... that is  ;) ).

Tape it.  If it's a great performance, you've got it on tape.  If it's not so great, you don't have to show it to the world.... mabe just your frinds at PianoForum :)  But if it's a great performance and you didn't tape it, you will kick yourself for not taping it.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Be careful that you do not do anything to violate the rules of the concert regarding videotaping.  Often making recordings at performances violates copyright laws, as well as the 'privacy' of the performers.  In a case where you are the soloist this would be OK, but since you will be performing on stage you should ask their permission to have someone record the performance.

Good point allchopin.  But I'm afraid I have some sad news  :'(.  Our digital camera only takes a 3 minute video, and my piece is 3 minutes and 30 seconds not including the introduction!  AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!  So what do I do?  Tape most of a piece?  Or what?  No, buying a real video camera before Sunday is not an option, and no, I don't know anyone who has one.  Sigh.

EDIT:  Thanks anyway m1469. :-\  Hey, less than 7 hours till showtime.  I'm excited!

Hey, I think it went pretty good.  I never lost the beat, (not seriously, anyway), but there was a few places that it got a little messy.  My mess only affected the MELODY in one spot, though.  The rest was pretty much just harmonically sloppy at times.  I blanked once so I just repeated the motive I had just played while I quickly remembered what came next, so only my mom and my teacher could tell, because they've heard me play it without that added bar ;D.  My hands were a bit shaky, but not too bad.  I didn't have a story to go with the piece, though, so I'm afraid I was in analysis mode through the whole thing, but it's a crowd pleaser piece anyway, so I don't think they noticed my lack of emotional envolvement too much.  Btw, I played "A Classical Rock," by Frank Mills.  It's Canada Music Week here, so it had to be by a Canadian composer, since that was the recital's theme.  Thanks for asking JP.  Hey?  Do I write like a girl or something? ::)  Or did you check my profile?  Lol

Glad to hear it went well.

No, I don’t have the time/interest to be checking profiles.. You started a thread a few months ago trying to rally the Canadians.. In that thread I unknowingly called you a dude, you then proceeded to kindly let me know I was wrong.   :)
