sight-reading
on: November 18, 2005, 09:35:20 AM
Hi, I have a wierd problem. It seems that I am able to 'penetrate' a score when I sight-read it, even though I take it at a slightly slower tempo. I do make small mistakes, but the flow of the music is there. My sense of rhythm is good, and expression just comes naturally and intuitively. However, once I start to work on the details and speed up, it starts sounding like everything is so mathematical and forced with mechanical accuracy! I am just wondering why?  :-\

Don't change anything to your sight-reading approach. Choose the spots where you usually make mistakes and play them a few times mistakes free. The aim here is to concentrate your attention on these spots that might present a technical difficulty that you're not aware of.
