One of the baddest pianists I've ever heard/seen...
he's stiff, agressive, boring etc. ...he's actually a banger ..

I love Kempff! His Chopin etudes are amazing but not the best I've heard but his Liszt and Rachmaninov etudes are out of this world.

Is he related to Wilhem Kempff?

I like Lugansky and Berezovsky for the Rachmaninoff Etudes-Tableaux and Liszt Transcendental Etudes.

When i saw him win the Yong Musician of the Year when he was 14, i thought i was witnessing the emergence of a genius.

I was wrong.

I've heard Freddy Kempff live in Zagreb, I think two years ago, and I must admit that this was one of my favourite concerts of that season!! :)
He played: Mozart-Sonata C-major K.330
                  Ravel-Valses nobles et sentimentales
                  Schumann-Davidsblutertanze op.6
When I read a programe, I thaught "How boring". But as soon as he started to play, you could feel his magic conection with a public. It was interesting-he play fasters tempos, but with great facility, easines and nobility.. Some peple said that thanks to him, they understood Ravel and Schumann, and it is really a great thing..

And as an encores he played two Chopin's Studies from op.25-No.12 in c-minor and no.7 in c-sharp minor, and it was stuning-I realy enyojed! :)

btw. do you guys maybe have some of his records? Iy you have, please be so nice and sent me on my mail if you can. My mail is kresomusica@net.hr

Freddy Kempf is one of my favourite pianists - and who said he was odd looking? He's soooo cute, can't believe he's married...lol!

I've not got any of his recordings yet - but i plan to, but i've seen him live 3 times and going to see him perform a Mozart concerto next year.

He is fantastic live - saw him play Appassionata, and his interpretation of Mussorgsky's Pics at an Exhibition was so memorable, firey - he had so much strength and stamina! Really one of the more memorable recitals i've been to.

I also saw him recently play Tchaikovsky's piano concerto no 1, which wasn't as exciting as his recital. Although his playing was enjoyable and technically briliiant I felt it was a straightforward performance - maybe because i've heard the piece too many times or the fact i was sitting very close to the piano and therefore couldn't hear it as a whole - there wasn't something quite right about the balance between the piano and orchestra from where i was sitting.

I also saw him do a chamber concert a few weeks back - Brahms's Quintet in F minor (op 34?) This was also fantastic, he really worked well together with the other musicians and gave a brilliant performance.

I must say, sometimes i do prefer solo recitals/chamber concerts if i want to really study a pianist close up - they are more intimate, you feel more part of the performance.

yes jenni, youd really like to feel his part...of the performance...yes.

i own the DVD and i can tell you its very solid.

i also have a video of his pathetique sonata, and its also very good, and exciting.

the interesting thing is, he isnt a perfectionist, he plays on a knifes edge and takes risk, so his performances , while hit and miss, are always exciting.

one of the least interesting pianists i think - a technician lacking in soul.  try yevgeny sudbin for a similar generation but with a warm beating heart..
