Do you have any favorite works of the past 5 years or so that you would care to review here?
Money does not make happiness, but it can buy you a piano.  :)

The best pieces from the 21st century are undoubtedly written by John Carey. He's amazing!  ;)

Seriously though, I'm not really familiar with many 21st century composers. Leo Ornstein lived into the 21st century, but not much of it. Of course there are composers like Penderecki, Rzewski, and Finnissy that are still alive today, but I personally think we should wait for another 10-15 years before deciding on the "best pieces of the 21st century".

"Victor´s Piano Solo" form The Corpse Bride. Composed by Danny Elfman.
The masterpiece tell the performer what to do, and not the performer telling the piece what it should be like, or the cocomposer what he ought to have composed.

At the risk of appearing undiscriminating, I would like to nominate all sixteen tracks of the 2004 album 'Solo Piano' by Gonzales (stage name of Jason Beck).  He is a Canadian pianist/composer based in Paris.  There are samples of the pieces here (click on "Ecoutez des extraits").  :

I have listened to this album probably some 300 times, and I still haven't tired of it.   They are simple pieces, full of emotion, sometimes heartbreaking.

For my money, you are up there amongst them.
