Arne Sonata No 2 in Em 1st mvmnt
on: November 26, 2005, 06:51:43 PM
Hi
I am to sit a teaching exam soon and this is one of my chosen (from a set list) of teaching pieces. I would like to be able to provide ideas of other similar pieces for a pupil to listen to, to develop an awareness of the style. Any ideas?

sometimes you can tell by what it's paired with on recordings. the London Baroque
www.emusic.com/album/10591/10591600.html
pairs it with avison sonata op. 5 #2 in C min/maj ; handel trio sonata op. 2 #3 in F ; stanley harpsichord concerto op 10 #4 in C minor
i really don't know if these are all pieces at the same level - but they sound similar!
of course, if you are teaching ABRSM - then there's also the pieces that are in the book that are of a similar style. good luck with your exam (and that you get an interactive student - and not just 'yes' 'no')
what i appreciate in a teacher is not a talking down, but a bringing up. you can start by giving a little history/style lesson (short) and then ask how it would apply to the technique of playing this particular piece. in your short speaking - you could bring up the many varied composers and their similarities - in effect, helping the student with the answer. i've found that over the years - just asking for an answer that they obviously don't know - makes them feel intimidated and put down. whereas - you explain something and then ask them to repeat it in their own words - seems highly effective.

Thank you so much for your reply, I really appreciate it.
I have the ABRSM book but none of the other pieces are very similar really. I will check out the pieces that you mention and try and get hold of the CD
I 100% agree about bringing a pupil up and not talking down, I try to subtley supply answers whenever I can.
The exam is mostly discussion and demonstration and you are encouraged to "use" the examiners as pupils if appropriate
Not long now..... 19th Dec
Thanks again
