Hello,

after reading about ABRSM and RCM here, I'm interested to hear more about the different systems in your countries. Are this ways only for students to go in professional direction or also for the "spare-time-musicians"? Do anybody know if a similar system exists in Germany?

Thanks
Hans

I have lessons as an adult at the local Kreismusikschule, very good too. They do run examinations but only up to Mittelstufe level. I think if you want to do Oberstufe you can take it at a regional centre, but as I'd already done Grade 8 ABRSM it didn't apply. I don't think there are higher level exams for spare time musicians. ABRSM have a representative somewhere in Germany, probably the western side, who could tell you if and where exams happen here.

ABRSM exams are for spare-time musicians.  you do not take these exams in the conservatories.  the grades 1-8 are stepping stones which take you to at best (max mark and well prepared and lots of supporting literature etc) to conservatory entry level.  The diplomas are ften taken by keen amateurs or by people who study different subjects at first degree level who wish to study music at a postgraduate level. the same with Trinity Guildhall and London college exams.

Hi,

thanks for your answers, especially the link is very interesting. I don't intend to undergo exams, but I like the orientation you can have along your way according to the syllabus in this programs.

Greetings
Hans
