tired of switching pianos for every concert?
on: December 02, 2005, 01:45:50 AM
Just a thought…
Why can’t we be like other instrumentalists who can play and perform on their own instruments every time? Simply because the piano is too big.
But I have this crazy idea… why don’t we have our very own and personal piano MECHANISM. You know, the one that piano fixers take out to re-voice, clean, etc? It includes the hammerheads and all the important parts that will determine the action and touch of the piano (am I correct to think this way?).
This personal mechanism then becomes portable provided with a good case. And this will be the one that we substitute for the default mechanism of a piano in a hall… and voila! It will feel like our own piano at home!
Of course the sound will be another issue because sometimes, it seemingly feels that it affects the touch (like when acoustics is too dry, the touch seemingly changes), but let’s hope the hall has good acoustics. And even if we play on a different set of keys and strings, and a different body and sounding board, at least we get to have the mechanism which plays an important role in the action of the piano.
Then piano makers will have to adjust to this “new trend” by making their measurements universal.
I know there might be traditionalists out there who would like to stick to the real life of a concert pianist, switching pianos every time. But isn’t it what we always complain about? Can’t we imitate Horowitz in this aspect?
Is this a correct, although crazy, idea?
What do you think?

hmmm. that's a very creative idea. unfortunately, even with a case, it would be somewhat lumbersome. but, then there's roll-up pianos. remember those. they're lightweight, too - and you can take them on a plane easily. can you imagine if your piano action was absconded at airport security and someone else was let past with a pair of scissors?

Nice idea.
But then again, by being pianists we get chances to play on those exquisite instruments which we could never afford.

I am no expert on how piano's are put together and the insides, but with grand pianos, it is correct you can pull out the keys with the hammers and all right ? why can't you pull out the hammers and keys and stuff all in one part and just pop that into another piano grand piano lol, there is probably more to think about than that, but u may have somethin here
