help (speaker problem)
on: December 04, 2005, 07:20:26 AM
I just bought a used Kurzweil Mark 3. The guy who sold it to me played for me and it sounded great like there was no problem. However, when I took it home, I realized that the left top speaker wasn't making any sound. So I opened up to top panel, and there's no left top speaker under the speaker grate. Then I thought maybe you only need a right speaker for the high notes like on an acoustic piano. Is that top left speaker grate just for show? Or did I buy a digital piano with a missing speaker? I'm pretty sure I'm missing a speaker...I've contacted Kurzweil but they are lagging to make a response. Has anyone had any experience replacing speakers? What could I expect in terms of how long I have to wait and how much it will cost.

According to :-
ftp://ftp.youngchang.com/pub/Kurzweil/Home_Products/Mark_Series_Manuals/Mark_3_Owners_Manual.PDF

it has 4 speakers 2x 130mm woofer / midrange and 2x12mm tweeters.

There should be details on the back of the other one [assuming it's easy to access and see, to buy an equiv. replacement part.

Perhaps finding the local [or at least in the same country] service place for Young Chang / Kurzweil will answer the other questions. This page has some listed https://www.k2users.org/k2/k_aid.htm

If it's not cheap [unlikely to be warranty unless the speaker dissolved] a pair of monitor speakers or 2.1 system might be an alternative, although it's not rocket science to replace a speaker, you'll probably find any electrical repair place can do it.

Thanks for the useful links leahcim. I didn't even know Kurzweil was with Young Chang now. Anyway, I definately don't have any 12mm tweeters. The midrange/ woofers are there, but something much larger than 12mm is where that tweeter is supposed to be on the right side (about a 3 inch speaker)...and of course there's the empty space on the left...
Another concern i have is that that 3" speaker comes into play about 2 octaves below middle C (the crossover point?) If I had tweeters, what range would they start coming into play? I don't think my piano sounds bad, but it's definately different from the original way Kurzweil made it. I guess I'm confused about the sound distribution of a digital piano, whether or not there's a way it's supposed to be a certain way, or if everybody's digital piano is different and we could tweak it to fit our preferences. Thanks for any feeback.
