Yamaha vs Kawai
on: December 09, 2005, 11:53:38 PM
Can't decide between a Yamaha GB1 (4'11") with the Disklavier for $15,495 or a Kawai GM10-LE (5') with Pianodisc for $16,300.  Please help ASAP.

Both pianos are almost identical in price, quality and size. They may, however be distinctive in  sound and feel.  Play them yourself, get someone else to play them and compare. Just chose which of the two pianos appeals to you most.

Regards,
Robert.

You are choosing between two pianos of approx equal quality and size.  How they sound to your ear should be the first tiebreaker.
Other than that, if you are comparing the player systems, if the GB1 has Yamaha's base Mark III system and the Kawai has Pianodisc's base playback only CD system, than the Yamaha has quite an advantage as far as player quality.
Whichever way you decide to go, you will have a nice piano at what sounds to me good prices.

I agree, the Disklavier system on the Yamaha is going to be an advantage over the PianoDisc as far as reliability, mainly because Disklavier is built into the piano at the factory, and therefore much more integrated with the instrument. PianoDisc can be more problematic down the road, particularly if it is not installed just right. I've heard both, and I also think the Disklavier has a much more expressive, realistic playback. On the other hand, depending on what PianoDisc system you are looking at, you may be able to get more features like silent mode or recording with PianoDisc, or upgrade it in the future, which is harder with Disklavier. However, unless you know that an expert technician who has worked a lot with player systems has installed/will install the PianoDisc, I would opt for the Disklavier provided you liked the pianos the same.

just purchased a Yamaha DGC1 instead of the DGB1.  I figured the piano will be with my family for a long time so I justified the upgrade.  Can't wait until delivery.
