bone question
on: December 11, 2005, 03:08:34 PM
my mom told me that a package of knox gelatine in a cup of mint tea might help ligaments heal better.  has anyone heard this - and know if it works?  also, i've been trying out this onion soup with bone marrow in the stock.  i think it helped (maybe psychologically) my knee.

Actually, ligaments are made up of densely packed collagen fibres (a simple protein) and have a rather limited blood supply and hence are slow to heal. Therefore, eating gelatin will not affect the speed of the healing process whatsover, as far as I know.

You would be better to make sure you are getting enough Vitamin C and amino acids in your diet as these are important to the healing process.

Cheers

thanks!  that's a great suggestion, too.  taking vit. D couldn't hurt either - because there's not so much sunlight right now.

sorry.  i didn't mean to make you feel ignored.  actually, when i read your post - i thought you were encouraging and i should have said so.  it should make the ligaments heal better even if they take a longer time to heal than bone.  finally, i can raise my foot a little bit.  i was getting really worried.  (floppy foot)  this morning i did a little dance - foot forward, back, to the sides.  it was exciting to me to be able to move my foot at will.  before, i had to use the crutches to make it move one way or another - and going up and down the stairs was fairly painful.  anyway,  thank you for your input - and sorry that i didn't say so earlier!

seems that the bone healed at six weeks enough to move around - but the ligaments are just now at 7--8 weeks and i heard they sometimes take double the length that you wear the cast.  i wore the cast for about 5 weeks - so maybe 10 weeks (minus the two already) - around february - i'll be able to put some weight on it?
