Performance outfit needed
on: December 11, 2005, 06:03:46 PM
My junior and senior recitals will be coming up soon (I have to play four of them because I'm a double performance major), and I really want a great dress or outfit for the recitals. I don't want to wear any bright colors (like I see so many flute majors wearing), and I don't want it to be too flashy. I'm thinking black, burgandy, or dark purple. I also would like a full length dress. I've been looking on ebay and have found nothing that "reaches out to me." Let me know if there are any good websites that sells good performance outfits.

What price range are you looking at? Because, in these situations, or generally always, I much prefer to have mine custom made. That way, I always get exactly what I want, and nobody can ever wear the same one. ;D
I dont play an instrument, I play the piano.

Some you might look at:

www.bluefly.com (Designer wear, can be a little pricey.)
www.theeveningstore.com (Not a larger selection, can be a little matronly.)
www.coldwatercreek.com (Inexpensive, but can be a little tacky.)
www.illuna-fashion.com (Nice selection, not overly expensive.)

here's a custom-made site:

www.satinstitches.com/HowThisAllWorks2.html    it's probably best to find someone in your own area so you can get several fittings to make sure it fits just right.

another idea might be to look through designer dresses - find a pattern that's similar - buy the fabric (usually with a little stretch - even velvet can be stretchy vs non-stretch) and the less sequins the better, imo.  then get a seamstress.

www.dariuscordell.com/eveningcollection.htm  has some really nice dresses to emulate
or www.chameleonbride.co.uk/buydirect.php

black silk jersey is really nice.  i sewed a formal out of it a few years back and it never needed ironing.  it has a certain warmth, too.

I have put a fair amount of thought into what I wear for recitals and performances, and I always end up wearing what is comfortable, AND, what doesn't show sweat stains!   I go for something - almost always black- that is sleeveless or short sleeved, and dressy black pants or a nice skirt skirt., and use jewelry to dress it up.  But, I'm 49, not a college student.  I wouldn't want to be too cold or too hot, or have sleeves that got in my way.
