Stravinsky : Petrouchka
on: December 15, 2005, 11:15:08 AM
I've played some chopin etudes (revolutionary, double thirds), liszt etudes (paganini no. 2, TE 10) , rhapsodies #6 and 2...but how the hell do you play THIS ?? This seems harder than rach 3 and all ! I sat with the score for hours trying out the wicked tremolos in the last movement (and there are hordes of as difficult passages) ..and have no idea where to BEGIN !!! Anyone who has played this, please describe exactly how and where you began ...and do you leave out notes to make it more manageable. The original just looks impossible !!!
P.S. It is dedicated to Arthur Rubinstein ....DID HE PLAY IT

I think he played that, but I'm not 100% sure. But it wasn't probably one of his favourites stuff (it is really tecnicaly very difficult) so he didn't played so often Petrouchka
You can check that in his second autobiography (I forgot the book's name..)

It's not that hard to learn. It's almost all white keys. It's just hard to play. Step one: find fingerings. If you don't have the hands for it, removing notes may be a necessity. All tricks you may find is fair game. I know there is a part in 3rd mvt where playing stuff meant for LH with RH instead can help a lot. I recommend to forget about the notes between (). Hard enough without.
