John Field CD... I'm Confused!
on: December 16, 2005, 11:32:07 AM
I am looking to buy a CD off someone. It is titled as such:

JOHN FIELD

Nocturnes
Nocturnes from John Field (1782-1837)
Performing artist:
Bart van Oort, fortepiano
(Broadwood 1823)

Heres the front cover:

The track list is as follows:

Disc 1:

  1. Nocturne Op.9 No 1 in b flat minor
  2. Nocturne Op.9 No 2 in e flat major
  3.Nocturne Op.9 No 3 in b major
  4. Nocturne Op.72No 1 in e minor
  5. Nocturne Op.15 No 1 in f major
  6. Nocturne Op.15No 2 in f sharp major
  7. Nocturne Op.15 No 3 in g major
  8. Nocturne Op.32 No 1 in b major
  9. Nocturne Op.32 No 2 in a flat major
  10. Nocturne Op.62 No 1 in b major
  11. Nocturne Op.62 No 2 ine major
  12. Nocturen in C sharp Op Posth

Disc 2:

  1. No. 1, Molto moderato, in E flat major      3'54
  2. No. 2, Moderato e molto espressivo, in C minor      3'37
  3. No. 3, in A flat major      4'12
  4. No. 4, Poco adagio, in A major      5'54
  5. No. 5, Andantino, in B flat major      3'18
  6. No. 6, Andante, in F major      4'42
  7. No. 7, Moderato, in C major      5'02
  8. No. 8, Andante, in A major      4'25
  9. No. 9, Andantino, in E flat major      3'37
  10. No. 10, Adagio, in E minor      2'41
  11. No. 11, Moderato, in E flat major      5'14
  12. No. 12, Lento, in G major      2'23
  13. No. 13, Lento, in D minor      3'02
  14. No. 16, Molto moderato, in F major      4'37
  15. No. 17, Lento, in E major

Now as far as I am aware, John Field composed 16 Nocturnes. As you can see, the first disc only lists 12. I don't even know what the pieces on the second disc are, it doesn't actually specify. If anyone can shed any light on this I would be grateful, thanks!

The disk I numbers are Chopin Nocturne op. numbers, so that's probably what they are. I'm not familiar with the Field op. numbers but those are probably the Field Nocturnes. I always thought he wrote 15 Nocturnes but I could be wrong. Listen to them, that should solve the confusion. Broadwood 1823 refers to the manufacturer and age of the piano, it's a Broadwood piano made in 1823, very cool; it doesn't sound like a modern instrument, this is the sort of piano Field and Chopin used. I would get it, a cool addition to your collection!  :D

Very helpful, thanks! Now that you've said it, I can see that the first disc is what appears to be the Chopin nocturnes. Its weird how the supplied cover doesn't mention chopin though.

I agree that it would be a great addition to my collection, especially as its performed on a fortepiano :) I think I will get it, and i'll post back when i've listened to it and found out exactly whats what.

Just an update on this topic, I bought and received the CD. The first disc is indeed Chopin's nocturnes, performed on a Pleyel 1842. The second disc is Fields nocturnes performed on a Broadwood 1823.
