What do you really mean?

what do you really mean when you say:
1. "I think he is a better pianist than ____(say, John)." (what is "better pianist"?)
2. "I can't compare both of them, they're two different pianists, but both are great!"
3. when asked with the question: What can you say about his playing? Answer: "I think he did a good job."

I wouldn't normally say anything like that.
I have heard the great pianists on recordings, but I do not think much about them.
I am mainly concerned about my own playing.
Anyone in the Suzuki music programs is familiar with one of their mantras: "Never compare."
