Lifting Weights and Piano ?

Is Lifting Weights and playing the piano bad. Ive heard that it is but why ?

So, it's better to excersise aerobically then to lift weights, to improve your piano playing.
But I personally wouldn't think there's anything wrong with lifting weights and playing piano..

It's actually good that you lift weights :P

This topic seems to bob up every few months. The only detrimental aspect of resistance training for me is possible pressure on the nerves in the elbows, wrists and palms from contact with bars and expander and bullworker grips. My solution is to use quite thickly padded gloves; you can buy them from any sports shop and pad them more yourself if required. I have had no problems since using these.

But I personally wouldn't think there's anything wrong with lifting weights and playing piano..

It's actually good that you lift weights :P

I lift weights and play piano.

If i train in the morning, I can practise the piano in the evening with no problems.

My only advice would be to keep away from heavy weights and low rep work.

if you want to spend hours to playing piano a day weight-lifting isnt a good idea. It will thicken your arm muscles and therefore they will require more oxigen to do the same movement. -> you will get tired sooner.

But if you just play like an hour a day it doesnt matter.

I'm into BodyBuilding for about 4 years now and I don't have any problems with playing the piano. I don't know why people think lifting heavy weights is bad, if you're a pianoplayer. I know, there are a lot of theories out there, but don't believe all of them.

I train about 4 times a week. Every time I train for about 45 minutes up to an hour. The rest of my spare time goes mostly into playing the piano (4 up to 6 hours a day).

I'd say that if you play the piano several hours every day, the only part of your body that will risk tirering is your back.
It's the only thing that keeps me from, theoretically, playing every wake moment.
Working out will help you with that, so i'd say it would improve your possibility to sit more at the piano not the opposite.

Besides, as long as you don't injure yourself lifting weight, what's the worst thing that could happen? You can always cut back on the weightlifting if it poses a problem.

Yeah thats another thing, my back also starts playing up after long periods? perhaps back exercises, any suggestions ?

Hate to go off topic,
But, I never really feel too tired from piano..  (back, hands, okay) The only thing is, my mind gets "tired" of the piano sometimes.  Maybe I don't play hard pieces?

hmm thats quite worrying. you should feel mentally tired but you shouldnt feel phsyically tired. ss3d you have to remember what i told you from the last post. you can expect to jump into the piano and do 3 hours or even an hour a day, especially at your age. you need to start on half an hour day, then next month an hour a day. and if it means getting up from the piano every ten minutes then do so, but dont give yourself excuses to do it constantly. I think you may need to tell your piano teacher about the back pains. i used to get them and its not a good sign. my problem was with tension, i was too tense at the piano. so my teacher helped me out and i feel better with piano practice.

and if you dont have a teacher, get one.

I think they did a study at JH University on this.

Try lifting weights, then playing the piano. BIG difference. Your fingers cannot move normally at all. You are applying too much stress/strain to your wrists/hands and your muscles are being torn while doing heavy lifting.

I do a lot of lifting (5 times a week) and I always play the piano first. Otherwise, after lifting, good luck trying to play a piece.

It does affect your piano playing in the short term, but in the long term, it should be fine.

I really do not recommend combining playing piano and lifting weights.
I really do not see the benefit, plus you could drop a weight and really hurt yourself or worse damage the piano.
