I saw that I could get the complete beethoven at a real fraction of what it costs to buy say a Barenboim or Brendel. Just wish I could get an idea of how they sound.

I just went there and found a way to get them not to play AND a way to get them to play.  If you do a search for "dino ciani", you will find a few CD's listed.  Under them are links to either buy them or listen to them.  If you choose listen, you will not be able to listen for some reason.  It brought up windows media player but would not play the "playlist".  Instead, click on the picture of the album and you will be taken to the listing of all sonatas on the CD.  For me, it took me to

https://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=ADFEAEE57B19DF47A47F20CE9A2F4DC8BA7AE11DFE44F78F172C0456D3B82D7CDF1F77C369A48A81B0F86AB67FB0FD2EA45F43D1C0EE5FF6D86F2D4CF0&sql=43:115169

but it may be different for others based on the login info or session id, I don't know.  On that page, there are speaker icons listed for every sonata.  Click on these and they will play.  At least they did for me.

It sounded like the playing was solid, though the sound quality wasn't that clear -- sounded like it was recorded in an ambient hall and the notes seemed to run a bit together for my liking.  It could be the encoding they did for the website to a degree.

I think I heard Ciani play for the first time tonight.  He was the bonus in a DVD of performances by Wilhelm Kempff.  He played a Schumann Novellette with tremendous vigor and accuracy.

Then he played two pieces by Bartok - very beautifully.  But the first performance was marred by noises in the recording studio or auditorium - wherever he was.  He seemed only mildly disturbed by the noise which sounded like somebody had dropped about a ton of bricks - more than once.

He looked extremely young.  He must have been about 26 at the time.  It is sad to think he only had another seven years before his fatal accident.

He has a huge discography for one so young.

I don't know if any members have visited some of the sites dedicated to Dino Ciani.  There was one amusing one; that of the Associazione Musicale Dino Ciani.  I have not found the Italian version of the site to see if the same stange expression is there.

They say:

"The "Dino Ciani" Association derives its name and its animating spirit from a great young pianist, a remarkable personality of the Italian and International music world...
Thus it is not by chance that he has been chosen as the symbol of the ™Dino Ciani¨ Association, founded to promote musical culture, especially through the education and specialization of young musicians in order to introduce them to the possibility of a profession in that field and improve every opportunity of experience and comparison."

I imagine some of us were thinking what a remarkable coincidence it was that Dino Ciani was chosen as the symbol of the ™Dino Ciani Association.   But we learn from the site that it was  "not by chance".  I really must find the Italian version.

Actually, I have found the Italian version of the ™Dino Ciani¨ Association.  It was just a matter of clicking the little Italian flag in the top left hand corner; obviously too complex for me. (https://www.promart.it/DinoCiani/decennale/decennaleEnglish.html)

Anyway, they say exactly the same thing in Italian as they do in English:

"L'associazione "Dino Ciani" deve il suo nome e lo spirito da cui è animata a un giovanissimo, grande pianista... Dino Ciani fu un eminente interprete...
Non è quindi un caso che il nome del grande pianista sia stato scelto per costituire il simbolo delle attività dell'Associazione "Dino Ciani""

So again we are reassured that it was not by chance that they chose Dino Ciani as the symbol of the Dino Ciani Association.  I must say I do find that reassuring.  They might have chosen Brendel, or Neuhaus but, no, they chose Ciani.

Is this comment just a product of my wierd AUstralian sense of humour?
