drawing pins in hammers
on: December 26, 2005, 05:10:52 PM
So, yeah. I stuck drawing pins into the hammers of my old upright (to mimick the sound of a harpsichord, of course).

Am I doing lasting damage to the strings/hammers???

probably, not sure.

wondering why youre concerned, if it ends up sounding good, keep it as it is, i wouldnt care too much if it was my secondary piano, as long as noone touches eugene...right?

Am I missing something? Who the hell is eugene?

And yeah, it does kinda matter. Because if I wanna take the pins out, I want the piano to work still.

If you wanna f**k your upright up go ahead, doesn't matter if you got a better piano, if the upright sucks do what you want but if its still a good upright sell it. Once you take them out, you will destroy the hammers/strings.

If you've only done this once, you'll be fine.  :) I wouldn't make a habit of it, and I wouldn't do this to a fine instrument... it's sort of like doing a horrible voicing job.  Have fun until you're bored with it, then take the pins out, and leave them out::)

Ok, so if I take them out after them being in for ONE day, then all is not lost?

Your piano will still work, it probably doesn't affect the action that much unless one of them falls into the action and does dammage.

What's done is done.  When you pull them out there will be a verry likely chance that the tone may have changed.  To what degree depends on where exactly on the hammer you put them.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Yeah. I just took them out. It sounds just the same as it did before.

This is because, when I put them in, I looked carefully to see which part of the hammer was hitting the strings. and I didn't stick the pin into that part. I put it slightly below, and angled the pin so it hit the strings.
