What recording of Brendel did you get? 60´s, 70´s or DDD?

The masterpiece tell the performer what to do, and not the performer telling the piece what it should be like, or the cocomposer what he ought to have composed.

Have you listened to Robert Silverman's 10 CD boxed set?

Have a look https://www.robert-silverman.com/cd/Beethoven32.html

I don't have many recordings of Beethoven's sonatas. I can remember my impression of the following pianists:

1. Horowitz. 2. Rubinstein. 3. Richter. 4. Ashkenazy.

I suggest avoiding Ashkenazy's Beethoven, because to me it's vastly inferior to Rubinstein and Richter. Horowitz' Beethoven is OK, but either I need to listen to it more (I only heard it once or twice) or it's not Horowitz's best repetoire.

You can't go wrong with Rubinstein or Richter, although the recording of Op. 111 with Richter live I have is sub-par. His Appassionata is superb, though. It was his favorite of the Beethoven sonatas. (Scriabin's favorite was the Tempest... by the way.)

The big names are Arrau, Kempff and Schnabel.

I have to say I have a soft spot for the Annie Fischer set.

You are wrong.

He is aknowledged massively as a reference, I can somewhat agree, yet, personally I put Arrau, Kempff, Schnabel, Richter, Gilels, Kovacevich, Annie Fischer and even Barenboim over him.
