What to look at when evaluating a version?
on: December 29, 2005, 05:32:16 PM
Hi,

when comparing different performances of the same piece, what exactly do you look at, besides the overall sensation it causes on you?

I ask this because, being a beginner piano player (1 year), and having being listening to classical music not for too long (2 years), i do not know what are the specific elements to observe...

In my case, the first thing i notice is the TEMPO choice. This is pretty easy to appreciate, of course.

Another thing i usually pay attention is the DYNAMIC RANGE shown. Pianists that are able to rise the interest of the piece by playing with different volume levels are of course preferable over homogenous interpretations.

Besides this 2 basic aspects, what other things do you look at?

Please, try to describe them the most accurately you can (that is, avoid vague expressions like "piano touch").

Thanks, and happy 2006 !!!!!!

I look to tempi and expression. I think the dynamic range mostly depends on the expression shown.

Of pieces I play I listen a lot more careful though. To the articulation,  If you know the piece better, you notice all kinds of things that make you appreciate the performance or not :) .
