Minor thirds chromatic scales
on: December 30, 2005, 01:20:23 PM
Hi,
In Grade 8 ABRSM exam, in the scales and arpeggios part, it is required to play the following:

Chromatic scale legato only, with each hand separately, in minor thirds beginning on A#/C# (two octaves).

I am asking about the recommended fingering for both hand as i am confused between different fingering choices

Thanks,

haven't they got a scales book? you could check in that
You either do or do not. There is no try- Yoda

Life is like a piano, what you get out of it depends on how you play it

Hi kghayesh,
The fingering I use for double chromatic thirds is a bit unique but it works wonderfully for me.  I will write out one octave- second octave is the same.  In the right hand, starting on A# and C#, I use 23, 15, 34, 25, 14, 23, 15, 34, 25, 14, 25, 14, 23.  Descending starting on A# and C# 23, 15, 24, 13, 24, 23, 15, 23, 15, 24, 23, 15, 23.
Left hand ascending: 23, 15, 24, 23, 15, 23, 15, 24, 13, 24, 23, 15, 23.  Descending: 23, 15, 34, 25, 14, 25, 14, 23, 15, 34, 25, 14, 23.
If these don't work I would recommend looking at op. 25 no. 6 by Chopin and Godowsky's transcription for the left hand.  Since these focus on double thirds they could probably give you some more ideas.
Best of luck with the exam!
