Hearing loss induced by iPod earphones
on: January 03, 2006, 02:27:15 AM
I've become rather concerned after reading about the recent report indicating that iPod earphones can cause long-term hearing loss since I like my Beethoven et al loud.
https://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/ptech/12/30/ear.ipod.protect.reut/
I've noticed that if I wear the earphones the wrong way (the left one in my right ear and right one in my left ear), the sound is much louder & clearer than if I wear them the right way. I don't know if this is a sign of hearing loss.
I'll probably turn down the volume a little bit from now on because I don't think I'm ready to write my Late Quartets yet.

late quartets. stevie - i'm worried about you. and, your hearing! and, my daughters. hope that you turn the music down a little. *you see! parents are always right. ahahah (but, then i stick things in my ear when noone is looking)
i always thought the most damage could be done when children have earaches. especially if they are allowed to fester and blow the eardrum. i don't know where my mom learned this one, but it worked. a teaspoon or less of WARM (not hot) olive oil dripped a little at a time (very little) into the ear canal. this is, of course, when you can't get to the doctor. seems that children have them at 3 in the morning anyway. it relieves the pain and seems to help whatever buildup work it's way out gradually. i never stick anything in my children's ears, but here stevie, let me help you. maybe you just have some wax buildup. *gets the tuning fork to test hearing. looks in stevie's ear canal. yep, what you need is olive oil. gets funnel.

People shouldn't listen to music over much background noise, especially with headphones of any kind. The longer the listening period, the worse the damage. iPods are worse than walkmans because the combination of earbuds (which deliver sound closer to the eardrum) and longer listening periods due to the huge amount of music they store. But, walkmans can damage hearing, too.
Rock concerts are a great place to damage one's hearing. I went to one, stupidly forgetting the earplugs I planned to bring, and my ears rang for over a year.
