Pieces for the oldies
on: January 14, 2006, 08:08:32 AM
Hey
Im thinking of doing a concert type thing for the elderly people just for fun and experience. Just wondering what pieces are good, maybe some fun songs that they can get into, clap/sing along to. Last time i played they enjoyed Hungarian rhapsody no 2 friska and the entertainer.
Thanks

I played a "Liberaceized" version of Autumn Leaves at an old folks home and they went absolutely mental.
Perhaps you could try something like that.

i always feel better when i read your posts, thalbergmad. you make me laugh a lot.
half the people there are already 'mental' so it's a good thing when you come across an older musician or some ladies that like to sing. the more involvement you get, the better. what i hate is when you just finish and want to talk - and the intercom comes on and announces bingo in the next room.

At the mention of the word BINGO, people who have not walked for years spring to their feet.
It's a miracle.

I used to volunteer at an old folks home. Once, a guy came with his accordian and just did his own renditions of "Yes, we have no bananas," and "Go West, Young Man, Go West." Man oh man, the guy was so repetitive and uncreative in what he did, but the old folks cheered anyway because they knew the words.
I bet they would be body surfing if you played the Matlock theme
doo doo, da doo doo, doo dooo dooo dooo doooo.......
