sonata in eflat op 31 no 3
on: January 19, 2006, 04:06:14 PM

   hey guys...

ive been playing this now for a few weeks and doing a good job with the 1st movement....... (also learnt the 3rd movement as its relatively easy)..

but the 2nd movement looks rather tricky(crisp staccatto in the left hand), to me looks very difficult technically..

may i have any advice on this movement and the sonata as a whole..

how advanced is the piece both technically and musically???

i think this sonata is awesome in its various movement,

cant wait to here from you all

     thank you

spend some time practicing the 2nd mvmt slowly, but with rapid staccatos - the main problem I had with that movement initially was tensing up in the arm - this produces an uneven sound.  When practicing aim for nice quiet staccatos which are all short and even.

It's a good sonata, although I find the 1st movement to be too experimental (and a bit fragmented) at times, and the fourth somewhat repetitive.  One of the harder "early" sonatas.  In the second and third movements especially, think "orchestration."  The minuet is a string quartet, with some elements of an operatic duet.  The scherzo could involve trombones, bassoons, .... my teacher voiced the opinion that it could easily be orchestrated in an effective way.
Always play as though a master listened.
