C3 Grand makes strange double notes
on: January 23, 2006, 09:41:49 PM
Hi
Just got a new Yamaha C3 grand. Then playing I sometimes note a strange noice like something rattling in the piano. Repeating the same note do not give the same result. Playing the keyboard slowly I have found that If I strike a key it can sometimes bounce twice agains the string. First when I depress the key, and again when the little recistance at the bottom is overcome. Is this normal ? Can it be adjusted ? Or am I just ignorant to the action of grand pianos.
I like to play softly, and to suddenly having strange notes in the performance is very annoying.
Comments anybody ?

I think you're referring to double-striking, and I think it's a mechanical fault found in some pianos. You need to get it regulated (a process where a technician... erm, does stuff with the action mechanism to fix it).
Apparently it affects Japanese pianos more, but I can't be sure about this.

I used to have that on my old G1. I bought a C3 and it stopped but is starting to happen again. The tuner shoule be able to fix it.

Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

No, it does not affect Japanese pianos more, it can happen to any piano. It's a simple adjustment that any piano tech can take care of.

The piano is new? Go ahead and call the dealer/tech and let them know that this happens when playing quietly. Could be that an adjustment isn't quite right for your style of playing. (Causing double striking, or bobbling)

Get a good technician in. It is possible that the offset of the hammers needs adjusting. The hammers are probably too high (i.e. too close to the strings) and rebound onto the string. A good technician will be able to advise and also to adjust it.

This is one of the #1 things that affect small pianos. Not just japanese
You need a regulation. If a technician comes in from the store, and spends 5 minutes. Tell him to get back to work.
He probably will try to just adjust the let-off. (5 minutes)
This may treat the symptom, but it will not solve the problem.
The problem may be in other areas, including key depth, hammer stroke, jack alignment, backcheck alignment, or any other (of a million) thing. A piano should be comletely regulated, because changing a setting to overcome a symptom, will throw the geometry out, and cause future problems.
Any other problems, please PM me, if you need to check a quote to see if it is fair. (I am a technician) and I would be happy to interpret anytihing your tech says.
