R. Schumann Knave Rupert(Work in Progress!!)
on: January 26, 2006, 10:51:47 PM
Hey Everyone
I have been working this for about a month in my piano class at school, that i took this year, and i wanted to know what would you all think of it. I havent been playing piano that long though. It' a work in progress, so there are mistakes. I'm looking for advice/comments/critique.Please be honest and tell what you think about it.
Thanks

I wonder if the keyboard that you are using is touch sensitive or not because it was all played at the same volume. Try to keep the tempo going, don't to slow down especially around 0:46 seconds and try to make the notes which are not the repeated ones come together cleanly.
You should try to make the legato ties more obvious. For example in the opening notes, DA da da da, DA da da da, Daaaaaaaaaa da daaaaaaaaaaaa da, daaaaaaaaa da daaaaaaaaa da chord chord CHORD. Something like that.
You also finished at a faster tempo than what you started with. The note inaccuracies should slowly iron themselves out with practice, you should record it on a real piano next time, then it would be much easier to hear your playing.

My keyboard is touch sensitive that is why it sounded like that, financial issues right now so i cant afford a real piano at this moment but we have real ones at school so i'll try to record it there.I'll try to "smooth" out my legato so it sounds better and to keep my tempo at a steady pace.I need all the advice I can get because i have to play this on career day in like 2 months, and this prelude by Bach. Thanks a lot for your help

The best advice I can give is to slow down a bit. The speed you are playing it is about the correct speed for performance, but it isn't up to performance yet. Taking the metronome down by about ten beats will make an enormous difference in the precision and clarity of the notes.
You should also attend to the dynamics - exagerrate them, in fact, at least for practice. Each of those sections in the main part should steadily crescendo and the three chords should be loud and give the feeling of some sort of revelation.
I just noticed that "lostinidlewonder" said to keep the tempo going. I don't think I'm contradicting him: the whole thing should be the same speed, but I think you should slow down when practicing until the clarity is there.

My teacher always tell me that, to slow it down and not try to play it at performance speed because it isn't time for that yet.
The cresendo part you couldnt hear that since my keyboard is touch sensitive, which is why dread playing on it.hopefully in a month or two i can buy a nice digital one.
And i will keep the tempo down, which i think is one of my bad habits, since i tend to always play pieces at performance speed when im not ready
,lol. But thanks for your advice,i appreciate it alot.
