Frammenti aforistici (practice journal)
on: February 01, 2006, 07:36:24 AM
Hi all,

I plan to learn Sorabji's [20] Frammenti aforistici (1964)(I have seen it spelled also as aforistichi, but I am yet to see the score; I'll let you know).  I have never played any Sorabji, and it is quite possible that the music will be too hard for me.

As I progress (or not) I will post here to share my experience.  Please, if you have any insight on the piece (or the project) feel free to chime in.

For the time being, I would love to hear from anyone who plays this music.

Cheers,

I received the score of the Frammenti Aforistici today.  With great excitement I opened the book and started to peruse the maniscript pages.  I looked for the slower ones, and among those for the ones with a more accessible texture.  When I found a suitable one, I started to find the notes and tried to start to make sense of it.

It is humbling.  I am a fairly good sight-reader, but this music is obviously not for the impatient.  I am not sure I am playing the chords right, and for the first time in a very long time I am sympathizing with those who have to read measure for measure, hands separate, in order to be able to learn a new piece.

After about 15 minutes of this, I pulled my Well-Tempered Clavier and played a few preludes and fugues which felt quite good after the struggle to read this new and unfamiliar music.  The textures are obviously rich, and I suspect that at some point the score will start to reveal its secrets.
