Hand Positioning
on: February 01, 2006, 11:04:31 PM
hi
i have been playing the piano fro a year and a bit
i used to play the flute for 4 years
when i play the piano my baby fingers are very weak  :'(
they are slower and cant stay in the rite position
i started to notice this and thought my fingers were werid or something .. but i figured out that my right baby finger is stronger because i used it a bit when i was playing the flute
my left baby finger is weaker because it wasnt used at all when i was playing the flute
--------
ok i still play the flute at school
but how do i keep my baby fingers in the right position while playing the piano and how do i make them stronger?????????????????
yah i can see my hands on the paino are a bit different because the flute but i am working on it but the baby finger thing is not getting any better
i tied  -hanon patterns-scales-using them more-playing songs that use them -
if ya have anything that will help me please tell! ;D

Greetings.

My advice is slow correct practice. Practicing scales and other technical material(Hanon might be a good choice) slowly paying attention to the hand position and making sure that all fingers aren't falling over and that you keep your hand at the correct position. Practice scales and excersized slowly and carefully, paying attention to every finger and those that are weak. Also a finger independance excersize might help. For example a C major chord(C, E, G, C). Holding down C and G while playing carefully and without pressing E and C, the alternate. Practicing scales is very important. The invention is also a good excersice, again practice slow with exactness. Czerny etudes help out tremendously. I especially recommend these excersizes along with the previous I mentioned because they help out alot. Ask if you have any questions. Hope this helps. :)

Before you play your first note every day, play the 'chopin position' for RH
e fsharp gsharp asharp c 12345.
Note that your knuckles sould be paralell to the Keyboard = your pinky might be completely extended.
now focus on 1 fingertip and try to move only this fingertip (= your hand stays stable). Now try it with your pinky! got the sensation? Cool

You don't need stronger fingers you need coordination and control!
relax your wrist.

Good luck and give us feedback!  :)
