Apparently there are 3 different versions of Liszt's 4th Transcendental Etude 'Mazeppa' in d minor. There is a fairly easy version that is a simplified version, of the 2nd hardest Mazeppa version (that most of us are familiar with - Jemboy played it on his web-site)...

There apparently is a 3rd Version of Mazeppa which is apparently almost 'impossible' to play. WHat happened is that apparently liszt wrote the Simplified Version of Mazeppa first, then years later composed the ultra hard version. When he found out very few could play it, he simplified the ultra hard version to the one we know today...

Is there anyone out there who has the sheet music or the MP3 of the Ultra hard version of Mazeppa.. It would be interesting to see, and I am deeply curious about this.

I know this is true, because a University Lecturer told me about this.

Actually, there are 4. I have pdf's of all of them, but it will take me a short while to post it as they are in rather large books.

I think i have a recording of the 1838 version, which must be the one you describe as almost impossible.

I have a little bit of work to do.

4??? Wow, LIszt must have been a little fascinated by this piece to do so many different arrangements.... Hey - If you could post them, that would be grand.

If you have a recording of the 1838 version, that would be swell. I am currently learning the semi hard version (the familiar one) and contrast between what I am playing and how he could better it.

Thanks for that.

Damn, thanks for that Thalbergmad.... Pretty sweet. Having said that, I did realise that the Mazeppa, that there is very little difference between the 1838 version and the different version, apart from a section in the middle and the beginning staccato chords.

Are you sure they just aren't 2 different transcriptions of the difficult version.... I read in a book (of course I happen to forget the damn title of it), that there were only 3 different versions.

Anyway, thanks for that. Great work, I owe you one.

PS I was deeply disappointed when I heard the extremely difficult version of Mazeppa... Doesn't sound that hard. I was expecting something that would rival Rachmaninoffs 3rd or something. but Kudos to you for finding it.

I have not compared the scores of the 1838 version and the alternative, but I understand there is not much difference, apart from the introduction.

As to the difficulty, the 1838 version taken as a whole are supposed to be more difficult. I have never played the 1838 of the Mazeppa myself, but did a few years ago attempt the earlier no 10 and found it considerably harder than the later version that is played today.

Hope you enjoy.
