on: February 06, 2006, 10:20:02 PM
i'm attempting to find a church hymn to sing for my choir audition, except there's about 5 million of them- i'm trying to find one me might've sung in chapel at school except i don't recognise any! any recommendations?

my favourite (and my school's unofficial anthem) was one that went "Guide me o thou great jehovah, pilgrim through this barren land". This sounds wikid when sung by 1000 boys but don't know how it would fair with a mixed choir. If I can find any of my old school diaries I'll try to find others that I liked.

My favorites are

O Come, O Come, Emanuel
A mighty Fortress is our God
Were you there when they Crucified my Lord
Be still my Soul(slow mvt of Finlandia)
Let all Mortal Flesh Keep Silence
Be thou my Vision

There's also a nice one based off of the slow section of Jupiter from the Planets.  I can't remember its title though.

[edit]-I forgot Dearest Jesus, what law have you broken, which is the hymn used in Bach's St. Matthew Passion

amazing grace is a good standby.  find a jazzed up accompaniment that changes key once or twice.  i had a great one that i found in a new gospel choir songbook (with piano accompaniment).  it was so great that i transposed it to key - and minimized the length.

this is only for the audition! it's just meant to be sung unaccompanied, just short and simple. and amazing grace has been requested not to be sung, poor woman has probably heard it sung badly to last her a million lifetimes! anyway wil check those suggested out thanks!

If you're looking for a classical, somber beauty try:

Jesus Priceless Treasure
O Sacred Head Now Wounded

Two of my favorites. :)

"Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine" or "Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling" are two of my favorites.

I am Episcopal so this is what I would do.

Go to the website oremus.  It has all the Episcopal hymns with text and midi.  You don't get to see the sheet music, but you can play them all and I'm sure you will recognize something. Start with the 1982 Hymnal, that's where the common ones are.

I don't know what your denomination is, you might have to check some other sites.

Church choirs can be a lot of fun and are always a learning experience, good luck.
