I can barely get enough of a student loan to get by, which means that all the money I owe I owe to the bank. At least the SLC wait until you're earning before they start demanding their money back. So when I graduate it's going to be hell paying back all that money. Nightmare!

Why, do you have a student loan, too?

Have you any idea what that converts to in British pounds? Just for comparative purposes!

my hecs debt is going to be around $25 000 i think, i'm up to $8 500 so far. i'm not particularly fussed about it paying it back, dunno why. maybe cos if i'm lucky some nice relative will pay it for me, also cos compared to private school fees and even moreso compared to what my parents are paying to have my sis do ballet in england it's nothing!!

This is exactly why my parents didn't mind paying, it was actually cheaper than my school fees in high school.  :P

The last thing I'd want is to be starting life with a massive debt that needs to be paid off, but I would have gone to university regardless.

I got a lesson in debt from my job... I'm convinced that most of the residential housing in my city is there because the workers have eternal debt to pay off :D. $30,000 in the hole is not an uncommon story, and we're not talking something purposeful like an education. More like credit cards, taxes and affluenza. Basically people living FAR beyond their means.

The funny thing is all the reasons they come up with, "things would be different if suchandsuch". One I remember declared bankruptcy after a good many years trying to dig out himself. He got in the clear, was making money. Slowly began buying some nice things, and now I believe he's digging himself right back into the hole. Old habits die hard.

I get the idea that the fiscally responsible can easily handle debt, whereas certain others could start life with a great deal of money and lose it all + before they even know.

hecs is something that stands for something but i can't remember, and it's changed to the government help scheme or something- basically you don't have to pay your uni fees (well you can and then you get a 25% discount) until you're earning over $30 000/yr and then they take it off by some 1 digit % based on how much you earn gradually. no interest, no extra fees (except union fees but that's about to go out the window anyway)
