Emotional Piano Concerto
on: February 21, 2006, 10:34:50 PM
Is there any other concerto (besides Rachmaninov 2nd, Tchaikovsky 1st) that has a really good climax, and makes ppl cry? ;D

Yeah the Grieg really sucks, it makes me cry whenever I hear it, it's so painful.  Percy Grainger has an exceptionally bad performance of it, with bad piano writing, and bad piano playing of bad orchestral writing.

lol.

I do agree that the Grieg is very overrated, even though there have probably been many very fine performances. It's a concerto that pushes the listener's buttons by juxtaposing typical Romantic "emotional" elements and comes out rather shallow. Moulded more intelligently and carefully, the good moments of the Grieg could have formed the basis for a wonderful concerto, but the way they are used is awkward more often than not. Witness, for example, the pathetically simple transitions between the contrasting themes in the finale, which essentially derive the entire movement of any development.

For example, I once heard someone liken the opening octave fall on the piano to a waterfall in a Norwegian fjord. That is not true. It's just an octave fall, meant to capture the listener's attention without adding anything to the music, as in "look, my concerto is cool too, I can write serious piano music."

scharwenka's 3rd piano concerto. actually, all of his concertos are very climactic and emotional, but the 3rd is the most emotional and climactic.

Barber Piano Concerto
Prokofiev #2

Yes I also thought of the Barber Concerto. It is awesome and incredibly beautifull. Barber's "Medea's Meditations and dance of death" also comes to mind, although it might not be in a concerto form, it is incredible beautifull and poetic in my opinion. Haven't listened to the Prokofiev's concerto yet. Hope this helps. :)

Schumann Piano Concerto in A minor

Any more? I'm like stressing out on my senior piece. The Rachmaninov 2nd has already been played last year and the Tchaikovsky is too long. >.<

Couldn't find a recording for Scharwenka's piano concerto. (also, sheetmusicplus.com only has music for his first))

Thanks,

Yes Stevie, the Bortkiewicz is beautiful.

Sort of Rach 1 and the Warsaw Concerto wrapped into one.

The Arensky to which it was coupled with on the Hyperion Label is rather nice as well.

it was hard enough to get the two piano edition. i do know of a guy that may have the set of parts and such for this concerto. google this guys name: Bhagwan Thadani. he is like the ultimate bortkiewicz collector. i have talked with him in the past and he has practically every bortkiewicz piece.

as i mentioned before, the scharwenka piano concertos are all dramatic, especially the 1st and the 3rd. these piano concertos are pretty hard to find, both sheets and recordings. the 1st, however, has been recorded by a large number of people, most notably hamelin and wild.

Is their a hard copy of the score and sheetmusic anywhere for Scharwenka's first piano concerto?... The one in sheetmusic plus is Op. 89 and that is the wrong opus number, should be 32 (by the way it says arranged by scharwenka)

i dont know of where to get a hard copy of the scharwenka 1st piano concerto. op 32 is the right opus. op 89 is the 4th piano concerto (another very good concerto). it says arranged by scharwenka because it is probably a 2 piano reduction that the composer himself arranged. the sheets i posted are the 2 piano reduction.

Isn't his 4th Concerto like in F minor? Sheetmusicplus says its in B minor. *also says Hummel* https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/store/smp_searchresults.html?cart=335032941016153748
This is retarded... Why don't publishers publish these underplayed concerti?

dont do tchaikovsky, please!! the barber concerto is a bit more modern and different. you may like it.

i got this from a friend at another site. just thought id pass along the joy.

barber concerto mp3s:
https://rapidshare.de/files/14545838/Browning__John_-_Barber_-_Piano_Concerto_Op38_Mvmt2.zip.html
barber concerto sheets:
https://rapidshare.de/files/14546175/Barber_-_Piano_Concerto_-_sheet_music.zip.html

i apologize, there is a one hour waiting period in between the files. if i had uploadee them, i wouldnt have used this site.

btw, the 4th scharwenka is in the key of f minor and it is op 89. it is a very difficult concerto, and it is emotional, but not as much as the 1st that i posted.

I absolutely cannot believe no one mentioned Brahms' 1st.

Go to www.piano.ru and go find it. It's one of the greatest concerti ever, and it fits your criteria, I think.
