Yamaha P116S-LU11

I am looking at a used Yamaha P116S-LU11 upright. The owner claims to have owned it for 20 years, but have only used it for 3/4 years. So the piano has been collecting dust for 15+ years. Is a piano in that condition worthy of considering? Thanks!

Well it would depend on where the piano has been kept all that time. Did the owner ever have it tuned or serviced in any way through the years?

Even if the instrument hasn't been played very much, leaving it to sit for that length of time is not good for it, especially tuning stability.

I would suggest having a piano technician give it a thorough inspection to assess its condition and serviceability.

Cheers

Sitting unplayed (and untuned) doesn't hurt anything in the long run.  There may be other factors over that time that could cause damage (lack of climate control, mice, etc.) but lack of playing and maintenance won't hurt.  *BUT*, the piano will probably need a pitch-raise rather than just a tuning, and it will need more frequent tuning for a year in order to stabilize at the higher pitch.   A pitch raise and more frequent tuning for a while will be extra expenditures, but are not long-term issues.

It's almost the same as a car that hasn't been used for 15 years: soft parts like tires and interior deteriorate whether the car is used or not.  More importantly, you are fairly sure that there has been no regular maintenance.

The bottom line is that you don't know what you're getting.  Any piano purchased for more than a few thousand dollars should be checked by an independent technician, just like a used car (even new pianos should be checked out).

Thanks for the advices! When it comes to a used piano, I'll definitely have it checked out by a technician. For this particular one, I just want to figure out if it worths my time and money to have it checked out. There are just too many question marks. I think I'll pass.
