I'm entering a competition where you're supposed to prepare 3 pieces. I'll only be playing 2 of them. One of them, I choose. And the other is chosen by the judges. Even though there's no sure way to predict which piece they'll pick, I'm curious what factors flow into it. I'm guessing that they pick a piece that will show the widest view of my pianistic skills. I'm playing a Rachmaninoff prelude for my first piece. For the other, they can choose between a bach prelude and fugue or an early Beethoven Sonata mvmt. 1.
Don't worry. I'm prepared with all 3 pieces. I'm not hoping for one or the other. I'm just curious.
