Keyboard for gigs!
on: March 13, 2006, 07:29:09 AM
Hi!

I am 14 years old and I accompany myself on the piano/keyboard when I do singing performances. The problem is - I currently have a very cheap keyboard - which does the job, but the lack of 8ves and the sound is really starting to bother me (ie - I CAN'T STAND IT ANY LONGER!!! :)

I'd really like to buy a new, full length, good sounding keyboard. But - to tell the truth, I don't really know what to look for!

Does anybody have any idea of a good keyboard I can easily transport - but that sounds good?

Thank you so much!!

Charlotte

P.S. Keep in mind i am not very good at saving money - I currently have about $500

Hello there,

A good powerful keyboard for under 500 might be a bit of a stretch. It might be worth your while to save up and get a nicer one later.

Browse around at https://www.zzounds.com/ They have a nice selection of synths from $300~$2k.

I was in that exact position a few months ago!  Well I bought a Roland Rd-300sx digital piano and it fixed that problem for me, but its about $3000...

the keyboard is only around 15 kilos, so its portable, and it is resonably small and good looking.  It doesnt come with speakers though so you'll need to get an external amplification system, such as the roland KC 60 keyboard amp...

The Yamaha P-70 is the best keyboard I can think of that's around your budget. It has the full 88 keys, weighted, much better sound than you'd get on a cheap keyboard, and is in the $600-$700 range depending on where you find it, so you'd only have to save up a little more. I actually prefer the P-60 (which was replaced by the P-70), and have some gigging-musician friends that use it and like it a lot. You may be able to find a used or clearance P-60 for right around your price range.

Hi, i also had this problem recently, i ended up buying a Yamaha DGX 305 it has 76 keys so not quite full sized but who uses those keys anyway. Also it's relatively cheap compared to many other keyboards and it's portable.

There is another the P-80, I believe, shouldn't be much more than the 70.  This is a great line - a lot of the theatres in downtown Chicago use these for their productions.
