Keyboard trouble on my Clavinova *UPDATE*
on: March 15, 2006, 07:32:13 PM
I've got a Clavinova CLP-950 that's always worked pretty well, but lately some of the key have become very sluggish and sticky. They're very stiff. When you press them down they don't bounce back up but only slowly rise back to position. In some cases, they stay stuck down. Needless to say, the keyboard is becoming unplayable.

Does anyone know why this is happening, or what needs to be done to fix it?

*UPDATE*

The local Clavinova tech came to my house today with a new keyboard. It was pretty easy to replace; just unscrew a bunch of stuff, take the old keyboard out, and put the new one in. The Clavinova plays as good as new.

This didn't cost me a cent either. Yamaha replaced the kayboard for free, and they also were paying the tech for his time. The problem was a known issue to them on several model numbers of Clavinovas; the problem was that the lubricant of the key pivot softened and weakened and plastic pivot, which then would crack, causing the kay to lean sideways and play sluggishly and stick down. Yamaha has fixed the lubricant problem, so I shouldn't have this happen again!  :D

Get a axe/hammer/sledge hammer/shotgun/fists

Bash the broken keys

Nothing else you can do

Buy a new one

or

Bash is up like i describe

or

Pay a lot for the techie to fix it, but it will probably cost more than buying a new one

if you go to the digital piano section in the disussion forum at pianoworld.com there might be someone there to advise you. I've seen simular problems been discussed there and if I remember right it's possible to fix.

You have cracked key pivots.  A common problem with the Clavinova line.  So common that if you call Yamaha they will give you an authorization to have the entire key bed ass'y replaced under warranty(one time only) even if your piano's waranty period has expired.

Thanks for the information. I'm getting in contact with the local Clavinova tech.
