For technique, Wunder.

For musicality, Wunder.

For all round pianism and playing, Wunder.

Although I have only seen one video of him ::)

I would like to hear more Lang Lang, and also Yundi Li (his La Campanella is great and one of my favourites)

With-out a shadow of a doubt LANG LANG is Kicking ass in the Tec department, and musically for that matter.

Wunder.

[lau] 10:01 pm: like in 10/4 i think those little slurs everywhere are pointless for the music, but I understand if it was for improving technique

I'd say Yundi, easily.

Lang Lang can't top that Rigoletto.

His finger dexterity is insane.

Lang Lang 2nd, he is technically talented too obviously.

Ingolf is impressive (As is MT of course)

Yundi Li.  Lang Lang may never miss notes, but technique is also about the range of expression at your disposal.

for me its a difficult choice between Wunder and Yundi Li, but i pick Yundi Li because his Chopin is so immaculate. dont know enough about Lang Lang to comment.

I'll go with the Langster, I've heard all those people, they are all really fine technically.
But Lang Lang takes the technique contest (musically too, I feel).

Just what exactly is meant by technique? If it means playing fast and clear, then there are HEAPS of pianists capable - i'm guessing Lang Lang would probably take the cake out of the listed pianists.  But I would think technique includes the process of playing the piano, so therefore encompasses sound/tone production as well.  So who can produce the broadest range of sounds and therefore come closer to the music's spirit would have to include having an adequate technique.  So splitting up musicality and technical skill doesn't really work.

no, thats what this poll means, by objectively assesable criteria - ie. the player's raw mechanism.

basically, speed defines the winner.

lang lang's technical level is way up there..

but i noticed that it doesn't sound like an exciting technique, no matter what piece he plays... but i bet he can play anything. so far, the only concert i ever liked of him is his debut in carnegie, i saw it on video. any other recordings i heard of him did not leave any impact on me... because his technique sounds unexciting and his tones are quite dull. lacks personality.

no, he is 21 and made his debut at age 14. and of course he didn't play his first concert without several years of piano playing before.

a korean guy named Dong Hyek Lim has superb technique plus great musicality. lang lang has no match with him. he was in the chopin competition last year but he wasn't in his best shape that time, his Bbm sonata was bad IMO. listen to his La Valse by Ravel, wonderful! he's only 22 i think.

but sometimes, no matter how fast and loud pieces sound, i still consider those who are more MUSICAL to have better technique because it is simply more difficult to pull off good interpretations. a simple piece may suddenly become technically difficult once a pianist puts into it some effects, u know, and stuff....:) IMO too.:) and i just think that that korean guy is more musical than lang lang.

i'm also not really impressed with lang lang's technique no matter how fast he can go. i think kissin's technique sounds more exciting, at least.

well, that's all IMO. ;D

yeah, this thread is about technique but when I talked about lang lang I was thinking of musicality, not technique. so, musically there are few pianists that come close to him, IMO (!)  ;)

Don Hyek Lim was here in Salzburg with Jazinsky in Summer for masterclass before chopin competition....He practiced chopin op.10 no.1 in Db Major and op.10 no.2 in Bb minor at the speed and very accurate (everyone was just WOW).
But for me just compare about technique and raw speed ...Wen Yu Shen beats him by far!
