I heard that the Japanese were working on producing some kind of substitute for ivory keys with a similar feel and grip.... anybody has an idea about it?

Yamaha developed something called Ivorine or Ivorite years ago.  I don't know if something more recent has come about.  I could never get it straight from piano salespeople that the piano I was looking at had such keys.  If it did, it did not feel like real ivory when I was shown it, IMHO.

Yamaha's synthetic ivory is standard on the: C3, C5, C6, C7, CFIIIS, S4 and S6.  None of the Yamaha uprights or smaller grands have it.  Additionally, on the above mentioned pianos, they use a wood composite for the sharps and not the plastic cover that is standard on smaller models.

Ah, much thanks, pianopitchman.  In that case, I can be sure it doesn't feel like ivory!

Actually, Yamaha's Ivorite does'nt feel much like ivory. It also doe'snt feel much like acrylic either. It's just feels different.

Ivorite's also used on the SU7 upright.  Must be why it's so pricy ;D
