Yo, thalbergmad, the cigarettes
on: April 02, 2006, 05:59:39 AM
I don't smoke anymore, I have cut them out of my diet.  really if you take a bit of a break you realize how disgsting they are.

that being said.........what are some tips/advice pointers for when you go boozing with the homies? I seriously have found ways to avoid/disregard the cancer stikcks on a regular basis, but as soon as we start drinkingg....man i smoke again...

for example the las t time i smoked was the St. Patty's day not 2 weeks ago...before that it was another 2 weeks....but as soon as  i start kicking back relaxing with the beer my abilitiy to reisist the cancer weakens like the gates of troy accepting random wood horses....

I am thinking maybe chewing gum or somthing; whenever the mofos take a break from the drinks to have a smoke, maybe i should go outside with them and chew gum?

DAIIIIIIIIIIMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmm

such a filthy habit.

p.s. Current smokers please do not reply...PLEASE!!

Well done, Rob. Have you been insanely consuming nicorette gum or has it been good old-fashioned willpower?
The smoking ban has just come into effect here in Sunny Scotland, and every bar you go to there are piles of smokers standing outside in the rain. How demoralising. :) I'd suggest you tell your friends you've given up and not to offer you any. Maybe they'll be nice enough to cut down to make it easier for you. If all else fails, just try to keep in mind the enormous benefits of giving up, and how you don't want to blow it because of a moment of weakness(/drunkenness).
I actually preferred being in a bar surrounded by smokers to what I have to put up with now, ie. my friends all jumping up and running out of the pub for a smoke. ::)

all i can really say is, dont expect things to happen over night. you will quit, you will smoke again and you will quit again. this process will re-occur very often but should be to a less extent each time. you can also make it deliberate, like cutting down instead of giving up straight, or just quit for a week then smoke, then quit for two weeks etc. you can also just give up smoking during the week and let it happen on the weekend. theres a few ways. i guess you can try all of them. about the smoking with drink, that will just happen go over time. just keep it going. good luck

Not to rag on any smokers here but... Why do people smoke in the first place? I mean, it dosent get you high, you dont feel any better or different (unless your a regular smoker),
and its terrible for you. Man, I am so drunk.

well, the answer is quite complicated.

Firstly, we have to look at the fact that all good musicians smoke. Lets look historically...
Richter, rachmaninov, horowitz, bach, kapell, the list goes on... even argerich has been pictured sucking one down.

Secondly, smoking was central to their music.

Thirdly, it obviously isn't possible then to become a musician without wonderful cigarettes. You're going to need them before lessons, after lessons, before and after all performances [bad and worse], when practicing, when bored, when eating, when waking up, when drinking beer, while going to sleep, and at random intervals in between.

Fortunately the time taken to burn each durry down to its butt [known as the "prokofiev end"] gives you many moments of thought, to analyse your playing, plan your practice, and think about phrasing.

You might have something there.  My piano teacher, who did many many recitals and various concerts throughout her years, was a chain smoker big time!  Finally she quit, but it's definitely part of the musician "thing".  I see it with the symphony folks downtown, standing outside the hall smoking on break.

im not going to deny it, but when i smoked, it started from peer pressure from when i was like 13. i didnt quit fully till i was 17. it just became a habit, then an addiction, then a short term stress releaver. The stress of exams and revision kept drawing me back in. but i havent failed this year.

you know it's bizarre, the number of people who smoke and i don't hang around with any of them. quite literally, all the people i do things with socially do not smoke (though i know people who do). randomly.

anyway my suggestion, bring as little money as possible when you go out, then even if friends offer you one, make sure they charge you for it so you feel too pov to buy it. or just come and hang with me in my smoke-free zone!

Musicians are notorious for smoking, and a rediculously high percentage of musicians are gay, who are also notorious for smoking, and as Horowitz said, gays make good musicians.  If you're not smoking, you're probably a bad musician.

well, you cant smoke and sing :p

Anyway, as Tash suggested, another good idea is to just nick the fags of mates instead of buying them. I wouldnt try not smoking when drinking. just dont drink till weekends, so at least you have a limit.

Do not put the cigarette in your mouth and light it. It is that easy, and that difficult also. I quit several times in the past, and about a year ago quit for good, I think. I have given myself permission to have a cigarette or cigar on my 73rd birthday, if I still want one.

Last night a guy in my band had a cigarette, and offered me one, he had forgotten I had quit. Just for a second I wavered, then realized I did not want to take a chance on resuming the habit, which is deeply ingrained in me. I have occasional cravings, but they're gone in 5 minutes. You can do it, Rob!  8)

how old are you now arensky? for your birthday, i wouldnt have a cigarette. the cigar would be a wiser choice because it is more social and image based. although both are an addiction, i see cigarettes more as an addicts' thing. i cant really write properly what i think about this, i just see the cigar as something you will find better, more satisfying for that one off and will spark the addiction less. Also, you dont inhale the cigar so i guess you will get less of a nicotene effect right? i dont know, i never really smoked cigars so i dont know much about them.

reminds me of some random place we stopped at in nz in the middle of nowhere- it sold possum pies and burgers and everything possum. anyway in the entrance it had a sign saying 'if you're smoking you'd better be on fire' we thought that was hilarious! (we're so cool)

Here is something that should encourage smokers to quit and discourage non-smokers to start:

There are over 4,000 chemical compounds, more than 50 of which are definate cancer causing agents. Here are some choice ingredients that are used:

1. ammonia (used to deliver the nicotine to your brain apparently)

2. nicotine (of course, but I bet you didn't know it is used as a pesticide)

3. hydrogen cyanide (used as rat poison)

4. acetone (the first ingredient in most, if not all nail polish removers)

5. butane (one of the key ingredients of gasoline)

6. formaldehyde (the preserver embalmers use to preserve corpses)

7. cadmium (also found in batteries)

8. arsenic (a potentionally fatal poison)

9. toluene (an industrial solvent)

10. tar (do I really need to tell you what this is used for?)

11. lead (very poisonous. it caused many deaths in painters and artists before lead was removed from paint.)(I don't know when they realized it was poisonous)

12. hexamine (used as a barbeque lighter)

13. nitrobenzene (a gasoline additive)

14. vinyl chloride (used in the manufacturing of plastic piping

Do you still want to light up that cigarette? And to help actually help stop smoking: www.tobaccofreeu.org/cessation/preparing_to_quit.asp www.cdc.gov/tobacco/quit/canquit.htm

Just remember, it's never too late to quit. Even if you are 60 or 70 and have smoked for many years, your health can improve within 24 hours, and just get better after that.

Some people argue there's no direct evidence that nicotine in itself is carcinogenic and there's even evidence it has positive neurological effects.

It keeps you alert and sharp and helps you focus and concentrate. This is why people smoke.

Research also suggests nicotine wards off Alzheimer's and Parkinson's and may also be a form of self-medication for people with mental illnesses like schizophrenia.

The thing that kills you is inhaling the smoke and other chemicals that cause cell damage.

Disclaimer: this is not a recommendation to start smoking. it makes you smell, looks tacky,  is a bastard to quit and it will probably kill you, almost certainly if you've had the bad luck to inherit a genetic predisposition to lung cancer.

That is not too bad.

you know you can still get lead in oil paint- a special white one called 'flake' white it's like the best white oil paint you can get and is ridiculously expensive and is banned in a whole heap of countries. except you can get it here from one i think it's a ditch brand. and yes i own it and yes i have used it several times and most of those times i was pretty careful and wore gloves, but who knows what i've absorbed into my body. i know there's some cadmium in there somewhere too...but if you smoke and paint your chances of getting some form of cancer increased 3 times or something. man, oil paints are so toxic

Research also suggests nicotine wards off Alzheimer's

Research is incorrect in the case of my Grandma. Though the smoking did give us an early warning to it, when we saw her sitting and smoking, occasionaly remembering that the cigarette was smoking and that she was smoking it.

Most alzheimers sufferers get on better when they're alone, as there are no outside forces (other people talking about things) to confuse them. Though it's a bit dangerous to leave them alone whilst cooking.
