I have a few recordings, and one is the carnegie hall reital, after he retired the 1st time. He starts the concert on a wrong note!! and ballade 1 is the final piece, and there is a hell of a lot of wrong notes, but its still great!!

It's true that Horowitz was a pianist who made quite a lot of mistakes during a performance (compared to other concertpianists). Though, still everyone liked it cause Horowitz brings so much emotion to the music.

There's also a live one from the early 80's, MANY mistakes; it's from when he was taking an early version of Zoloft, started to think he was invincible and could do no wrong. By 1983 his playing was truly appalling. He took two years off and came back with the Moscow concert, playing less demanding repertoire beautifully.

It is true, later in his life Horowitz was not the most precise pianist, ever. Also, he developed some mannerisms, which can be annoying at times.

For some reason he was struggling with 1st Ballade for whole his life, both technically and musically. I have at least 4 recordings from different years and none of them are quite satisfying, at least to me. Sometimes I listen to them just out of curiosity, wondering how come such a spectacular pianist as Horowitz could not find some magic there, or maybe he played it so often that lost its freshness.

I have seen that video in the carnegie hall and I don't like it at all. I have uploaded this video from massimilliano ferrati, the best recording I have seen:

And this is the Horowitz vid (from nicco):

The Horowitz Video is far more controlled than the 65 concert, though Horowitz still couldn't play it that well. There are parts of it that really shine, but the coda is usually rubbish because of the musical decisions he makes and it comes of technically rather shaky. The 65 version however, really does feel like you're actually there, and it's about to go off the rails at any moment.
