How about Composers Room on Piano Street
on: April 12, 2006, 07:30:46 PM
I see lotta works here from many young upcoming composers on the Audition Room.....great effort from all of them. But audition room has been more for pianists performing well known pieces so others can offer feedback and pianists can prepare well for the concert stage. And also its hard to comment on something thats new except like "great piece", i like it or i dont like it...etc
So many times composers dont get much attention immediately. Believe me this has always been the case in the history of music. ...
So may be we need a separate forum or like a composers room in Piano Street so all composers can hang out there and share similar interests, discuss harmony, compositional techniques, theory ect....and this forum can probably focus on what it always did best that is on Performance auditions and concert preparations...something like that...
Just an idea....

It is a good idea indeed.
I have for a long time considered adding a board for discussing composition. Mainly because many pianists are composing and improvising themselves and if not, are at least interested in learning about the process since it will make us more confident interpreters. This could possibly also attract some new members who are more of composers than pianists which for the mentioned reason would be an interesting extension of the community.
On the other hand this forum is focused on classical piano playing and it might be a good idea to keep it limited to this area. I don't know though... These topics are probably coming up anyway in other boards and putting them in a separate board would make the forum more organized?
Another idea which have been proposed by some members is to make a separate board for music theory.
To avoid getting too many boards we could make a new one called "Composition and Music Theory" but I think a "Music Theory" board as a sub board of Student's Corner may be more appropriate.
Please share your thoughts!

A composition board on this forum would be a very fine idea. Of couse I would say that, because I am a composer! Despite, rather than merely because of, this fact, I think it would be interesting to set up a board for the purpose of attracting material from pianists who also compose, composers who also play the piano and composers who are interested in the history of piano composition and pianism and accordingly write for the piano but who are not really pianists (in the last of which groups I myself fall).
I look forward to its launch!
It is a sad but inescapable fact of life that too many of today's pianistic luminaries are simply not known for composing at all; if anyone knows about Martha Argerich's string quartets, the symphonies of Ashkenazy and Barenboim, the songs of Pollini, the piano pieces of Zimerman, etc. (all names chosen entirely at random, of course), then I may sit corrected, but I suspect that it remains necessary for compositional activities to be much further encouraged in pianists, so perhaps such a board on this forum might end up doing its small bit to help with that...
Best,
Alistair

I think many members would probably get much benefit from a theory section and a composition section, although I doubt the two areas overlap sufficiently to justify combining them. The music students of the forum, in particular, could possibly help one another considerably with their theoretical studies. Personally, I would likely not post much myself in either. I know nothing at all about theories and do not wish to, and I find the Audition Room a completely satisfactory outlet for sharing original music for enjoyment and comment.
Having said that, I am only one among many. The Composers' Lounge on Pianoworld sees a reasonable amount of interesting activity, so the same would probably occur here.

I think it's a great idea! I think threads of people's compositions seem to get easily lost in the Audition Room and I would definitely prefer a separate forum. That also adds the option of composers being able to discuss and share ideas relating to compositon as well such as techniques, harmonies, form, how they go about composing, etc. I hope to see this forum in the future!
